Affordable Farmhouse Shelves no DIY required
If you’ve been loving that rustic farmhouse look of metal pipe and wood shelves, but don’t have the time or skill to build your own, you will love today’s post! I’ve found a fabulous way to get the look without any DIY required. I’m reviewing the Better Homes & Gardens River Crest Bookcase Shelf and I’ll tell you all about how to find one for yourself, and how easy it is to assemble! There is even an option to buy a set of two, for an incredible savings!
I’m afraid I’m going to be completely spoiled! It really couldn’t get much easier… I clicked the magic buy button on Walmart.com, and a few days later this was on my doorstep. A brand new River Crest 5-shelf bookcase!
I mean who wouldn’t love affordable farmhouse shelves with no DIY required? This girl does, that’s for sure!
Don’t get me wrong, I still love to DIY but I tend to reserve my large DIY project for things I can’t afford or that need to be customized. The older I get, the more I realize my time is valuable too. And I love the more polished finish the metal on this piece has going for it.
And when you can farm out the assembly, it’s even better.
Meaning I called for my son, and said; “Hey bud, put this together for mom would you?”
There are perks of having a handy kid around I tell ya. So he got it all unwrapped, un-boxed and put the frame together for me. He was needed to help Jimmy in the workshop, so I took over and threw an old quilt on the dining table and put the frame up on that to install the shelves. This unit is solid and very well made. And it went together like a dream. Not one single problem. Everything fit perfectly and the instructions were very clear. The shelves slid right into place and even the screws were nice quality. If you’ve ever bought pre-made furniture before and they give you those cheap-o screws you’ll appreciate these.
I had it completed in a jiff and then came the fun, I got to decorate it!
For now, it’s sitting pretty right here.
I’m loving it in the main entry, but with me… you never know?
And that is okay because this new bookcase is a really versatile piece. And we all know I love that about as much as I love pillows. So there is no telling where you might see it next? Austin’s room… or maybe down at The Little Cottage? A set of two flanking a TV would make a great substitute for built-ins.
I appreciate the detail of the chunky top piece. What a nice finish the crown moulding adds to it. And you can see the shelves are finished top & bottom. So it’s attractive, now mater how you look at it. I really had fun playing around with the decor and I can already envision how I might doll it up next…
Take care now, Shannon
If you live in a small town like I do or can’t find something in the store, you can shop the Better Homes & Gardens line at Walmart online. Online shopping was super handy with this purchase. I didn’t have to get it in a cart, check-out, get it to my car (it wouldn’t fit anyhow) or lug it into the house. It just appeared at my front door.

I really like the shelves and they look to be of good quality, however I’m not liking where you have positioned them in your home. The half on, half off position in front of your drapes is distracting from your very pretty dressing of the shelves and they’re also too deep as the drape behind is being squashed. You have indicated that this may not be its permanent position and I think you’re right!
I loved your very diplomatic comment. I’ll try to work on fixing those issues soon 😉
Love how the shelves add to the already beautiful space!
Thank you Marie! I have a feeling that are going to be super fun this Fall!
Shannon! It looks absolutely perfect! Love it! I also loved how you styled it. You have the magic touch my friend! xo
Hi Erin! Thanks so much cutie pie. Hope you are enjoying these last days of Summer with your kids 🙂
Shannon,
Amazing shelf, dear friend!
Versatile and stylish!
Fondly,
Pat
Hi Pat! Thanks, I think it’s going to be a good addition to our furnishings 🙂
Love that shelf and it looks great in your room!!
Well thank you Shirley!! It might park there for a bit 😉
Is it sturdy? As in if a dog rubs against it will it wiggle? That is my biggest problem with shelving these days. The cat can knock stuff off of it by rubbing on them. So I have industrial shelving in my craft room. Not pretty but I don’t have to worry about my collectables taking a tumble.
It is super sturdy! It’s got a great weight to it in my opinion.
It’s two men live here proof too 😉
Wow, great because I love the look of them. I will definitely be ordering one to see how it works out then maybe another. Thanks for this post and responding.
Men proof…yes, I need that too, LOL!
Sure thing, I’m always available to answer questions 🙂
(hehe. they’ve got to be right?)
THANK YOU, THANK YOU for showing these shelves on your blog! I have some similar to this in our Florida home and love it…but paid much more. I enjoy DIY when other people to it, but I am not handy around power saws and the like. with 2 homes to furnish I really can appreciate the price of these shelves. and have ordered one….just hope I don’t wish I had ordered 2!
Oh good!! So glad you found my sharing useful.
I kinda know what you are talking about. I did some searching and found a lot that were similar and they were soooo much more money.
I almost included a few to show what a steal this is, but didn’t want to know another product 😉
So I let them speak for themselves. haha. I only got the one. But I can so see them side by side, or balanced in a room with one on each side.
They won’t fit like that in my tiny house. So I’m happy with my one. Hope you love it!!
I love your shelves. I’ve been wondering about the quality of that line. I may have to get the low ones for my entryway now!
Yes!! The short fat one 🙂 I’m thinking I “need” to find a place for that. It would be so cute together.
It is for sure worth the 149 and more in my opinion. I was impressed.
I loved this post. Your shelves look fabulous. You are so blessed to have a son that is willing to work with you. Give him a pat on the back for me, will ya.
If you have a minute, where did you get the white stool beside the shelves. I am looking for a similar one for my guest room. Thanks
*Smiles*
Oh we are Pamela. He is such a helper. And being man-sized for many years, really helps out on our property and with projects.
I got the white stool for $1 at a garage sale. (don’t hate me) lol
I love that junky old thing!!
Love the shelves!
Thanks Kristen, me too 🙂
I love it! I need to order one for my kitchen!! Thanks for the post!!
It would make a darling “Open Pantry” – Enjoy!!
They have really stepped up their game … love your new bookcase (and, of course, how you styled it)! I can already picture your pumpkins scattered onto it, too! Lucky gal!
I know. I’m telling you, I was impressed with this… and I’ve been scheming on where I could put the low set of shelves. I really like it!
Or where I can put them side by side and get another large one 😉
I need 2 of these!! They’d be perfect for my office. It looks great in your space and I love the metal and wood mix! Love it!
They would be cute! There is a super cute short shelf too. I bet you need that as well 😉
I love the Better Home and Gardens line at Walmart. The quality is very good, the items are attractive, and the prices are good for the budget.
You said it! All that, I totally agree. I’m loving it all 🙂
I have ordered several items online and have been pleased. The first time I wondered how
it would be, but have not been disappointed. I love the shelves and the shorter ones too as well as was looking at the TV stand. See what you started? 😉
Yes, me too!! I love the short-fat pieces as well. I’m trying to think of where I need the one that isn’t for the TV??? hmm….
I’m telling you, I have been impressed at every turn with the BHG line at Walmart. Every single thing I’ve bought has been nice quality and the prices can’t be beat. I like to save my splurges for particular things. 😉
