If you’ve been reading Fox Hollow Cottage since the way, way back, you might recall I was big time into aqua when my blog first began. After a few years, and it becoming so popular, I decide to take a break from it. So much of a break, that I didn’t even decorate with any aqua last Summer!! Well… I missed it. So, I’m bringing aqua back into my life!
Aqua Blue Cottage Home Decorating
It all started one night a few weeks ago. I got the urge to paint my door aqua, and I didn’t resist. That kind of did it, and now I’m just in full-blown aqua party mode! When Jimmy and I went up to Seattle last week, we did a grand tour of all the HomeGoods in the area and I picked up some great new additions for the room. Instead of being safe, I’m having some fun.
It started with this gorgeous blue glass lamp.
I know I just picked up those two chunky numbers, but this one is dreamy. It’s just the sort of thing I’d normally talk myself out of, for not being neutral enough. As you can see, I didn’t listen! I’m always needing lamps with the shortage of can lighting and ceiling fixtures (pitfalls of an old house), so the chunky ones will be sure to come in handy, and might even go down to The Little Cottage.
A few stores later… I met the drapes. Or curtains…? What do you call them?
Let’s just call them pretty.
They are a little bit blue and a little bit aqua. And I love the paisley pattern. Nice and casual, perfect for my house.
Between the lamp and draperies, I was pretty excited to come home and see what else I could add to the mix?
I shopped the house (or more accurately, my home decor storage room) for everything else you see in the space.
The SEA over the mantel was something I picked up at HomeGoods a few Summer’s ago. It can hang on the wall too… but that would mean nails… and we all know that’s too much commitment for me. haha.
I’m continuing to keep the mantel & hearth really light. I’m enjoying the light, airy, un-fussy feel. My blue bottle, the shutter and the sail boat, all let the twinkle lights sparkle thru. So they are perfect here.
Though I said I might deepen the shade of the door, it’s grown on me. It’s beautiful in person and changes as the light does. For me, the light in the late afternoon shows off it’s prettiest version.
Now, I won’t lie. The sequined pillow is not soft and squishy.
But, it’s sequined!
And it reminds me of a mermaid… so its gets a big, happy, thumbs up!
I’ll give you a close-up of what I’m reading now.
Can you believe bloggers wrote all these books??? I am in awe of the pure talent these ladies possess. The journal and pen are from my dear friend Debbie, that is as close as I’ll ever get to writing a book! As much as I love writing, I don’t think I have what it takes to actually write a book. It takes far too much dedication! If you are an avid writer, then some of the ladies who wrote the books above have told me that the biggest decision you’ll have to make is self publishing vs traditional. As somebody who has no intention of writing a book, that means very little to me, but I’m sure it will make sense to a lot of you!
I love, love, love how easy it is to just swap out the curtain panels flanking the door, and get a whole new feel to the room. If you’ve got a spot in your house you can do this, do this!
It is really such a great way to reinvigorate a room, without spending much.
My $5 coffee sack chair is still going strong. It just floats around the house. Always happy wherever it lands!
I am really, really going to have to address the rug situation in here… it just looks sad. And empty. But I don’t believe in rushing, so I’m not. And, with the new farm table… the time of the big chair & ottoman in front of the fireplace could be limited.
There is usually some ‘tick tock’ going on at my place, especially where a dining table is concerned. They tend to have a short shelf life… and don’t stay in one place for long.
There is definitely still chilly weather ahead, so the throws stay at the ready.
Perfect for TV watching, snuggling up with a book, or if I get really lucky… a nap!!
Thanks so much for stopping by today. I’m having a great time infusing the house with lots of pretty shades of aqua & blue. If you’ve been playing it safe with neutrals, have some fun and add in a little color… you can do it! xo Shannon
As always, special thanks to HomeGoods for their continued partnership. I’ve been getting HomeGoods happy for over 20 years! Yes, I’m that old. hahaha

Okay…super awesome. I did the same…took out my aqua…tried a few differnt colors. Had the urge one day to change up decor thanks to Rockin Ruby Razz Scentsy…it compelled me to change house decor once again…smelled so cheerful and the house seemed drab. Next thing i know i am painting and pulling out the aqua from my storage store. Love it!!! Love your decor…makes me inspired to add more to my home decor

Yes, we had a break. It was nice, but that door opened the floodgates! I’ll be aqua at least until July, when I must have my red, white and… perhaps aqua blue this year? haha. Have fun getting your “aqua” on girl!

Nice, nice, nice! Your room is so light and soft. I love it and I am taking mental notes of how maybe I can make mine more so.

I do the same thing when I see a room I like. Always taking mental notes. Then looking for similar things that will give me that feel in my price range or that fit my needs 🙂 Happy aquafying!

Lovely room! Where did you get the long sectioned metal piece on the lower shelf of the sofa table and what is it called?
Shannon at Fox Hollow Cottage says
Hi Wendy 🙂 That is called a sectioned trough or a chicken feeder – I think I gotten mine from Decor Steals… but I may have picked it up at HomeGoods? I’m fuzzy on that one.

I also love Aqua and Turquoise. I have bins full of decor in these shades. I always end up going back to aqua too. That is why I like neutral upholstered pieces, so I can change from a winter look featuring autumn colors to summer where I feature aqua and blue tones. I always resolve to just do one look and stay with it but I always end up back with aqua eventually.
Shannon at Fox Hollow Cottage says
Yes! Exactly why I like my really large things in neutrals and enjoy white so much. I’ve had the same sofa/chair/ottoman set but have used oodles of different colors and I can change the room, pretty much on a whim 🙂
Happy decorating!!

Shannon, I love all the details! So many great easy ways to update a room. And together it all adds up to fresh and beautiful. Your photography is wonderful. I’ve been inspired to choose some of these in my summertime refresh. Thanks for being an inspiration here and on IG With love, Julie

Hi! Cute aqua-themed room. Nicely done! Please share the manufacturer and color you used on the door as it’s a lovely shade of aqua. Thanks!
Shannon at Fox Hollow Cottage says
Jeannie I mixed that myself, but it’s very similar to Benjamin Moore Wythe Blue.
(get a sample to be sure though, since I did make mine myself)

Oh my goodness…beautiful!!!!! I love the drapes. It all looks so dreamy!!! And love how decorated the fireplace….I may have to do something similar, great idea.
Thanks for sharing,
Tammy

Tammy I did too, they jumped right in my cart without much internal debate 😉

I LOVE aqua and could never tire of it’s beauty. The sky and the water. How perfect. Two of Gods Masterpieces. Those lamps are great. Recently I found two beauties myself. Wish I had a big heaping bowl of aqua sea glass.
In front of your sofa…I like the area bare for summer, looks good. I loved that rug you used to have in front of it.
Shannon at Fox Hollow Cottage says
Hi Karen, You know that is something I don’t have any of… sea glass. I held back from putting the starfish out, lol. It’s not actually Summer yet.
