Black, White and Neutral Cozy Fall Home Decorating Ideas
Welcome, come on in — today I’m sharing how I gave The Little Cottage entryway and living room a seasonal refresh! I’ve added in lots of neutral decor, peppered in a little black & white… layered on soft throw blankets, big fluffy pillows, delicious smelling candles… and a hint of Fall festiveness. From the hall tree at the entryway, to the living room, we are ready to greet Autumn!
New here? Hello there, I’m Shannon, and I each month I partner with Better Homes & Gardens at Walmart sharing my personal selections, and spotlighting the vast line of furnishings and home decor available in-store and online with all of you! It’s always a favorite post, and we all appreciate the great quality and the affordable prices!
Last month I shared the new Parker Hall Tree with you, wearing more vibrant Fall color. When I asked over on Facebook [you can join us here] how you wanted to see it next, you voted for “Neutral Fall” decor. And I tried, but a little black and white made it’s way into the mix, I hope you don’t mind.
I removed all the decor from last month, and started from the ground up. I added a braided rug, and layered on the buffalo check. The baskets stayed the same, they are now filled with scarves and extra blankets for porch sitting. It’s so handy to just dip into the entryway here when we are out back. I temporally topped it with my new pumpkin patch sign, until I can get it out on the porch when I decorate that!

I love the abundant hooks on this hall tree — because in-real-life you can really load them up with a lot of jackets, hoodies, scarves, hats, etc… it’s hard working (when I don’t clear it off to take pretty pictures).
I tried to use a lot of the decor pieces that I already owned and had on-hand here at The Little Cottage. It’s a good challenge to share things in new ways, and I like to try to show how you can really use so many of the Better Homes & Gardens staple pieces with different color themes, and in new locations!
I got the Gold & Metal Candle Hurricanes last Fall, and I decided to add some Walnuts to one, as a nod to the new season.
Tiny details really speak to the season at hand, yet are so simple to achieve. I love easy. I want to enjoy decorating. Not be frustrated by it. Adding a few natural elements can go a long way in giving your home a cozy, seasonally appropriate feel, without a lot of fuss.
I’ve been decorating The Little Cottage for a few years now, and each time I fiddle with it, I feel like I’m getting closer to how it’s meant to be. I can’t help but feel like the vintage Antiques Collectibles sign looking over everything called for and influenced the black & white I added in this time around.
IT JUST FITS.
Could be the season… could be that I just crave and live for change. But it feels perfect now. And that’s all that really matters right? That our homes feel right, to us.
And my right all started when I spotted something online and thought, “hmm…. that’s a pretty cute coffee table”. Wait, what — it’s only $80??? Well, I clearly need that. haha.
And it’s perfect — and it took me literally ten minutes to assemble. It took longer to unpack it! Austin thankfully did that part for me. An absolute perk of having him home to attend college.
I love it! It’s light and airy and takes up very little visual space. Perfect for this real-life small space! It might look larger due to the mile-high ceiling, but the footprint isn’t huge. The black frame grounds the coffee table, but the glass offers a minimal weight to the room. And it pulls the vintage sign and our light fixtures down into the room as well. I like that it ties everything in so nicely. For $80.
We’ve had the Russel Slip Cover Sofa for awhile now, and if you like a softer, squishy sofa it’s a good option for the money. It might not a be high traffic forever sofa, but we’ve been really happy with it. Especially for the price!
The vintage ladder will live here until we take the time to custom make some sort of cover to hide the electrical boxes. For now, I’m thankful I’ve got this perfectly sized ladder to hold our blankets. And hide the ugly bits of modern life.
When I spotted the new Black version of my Galvanized House Lanterns, I had to keep my cool. And wait for a sweet elderly couple to clear the isle so I could stuff two in my cart!!!! Not that I’m much faster these days.
You will most definitely be seeing these again. This is exactly the kind of decor I will use over-and-over for years to come. I still love my Galvanized version that I used for Christmas last year!!
Might be getting a repeat look with the new Black ones. We shall see, I never know what I’m going to do until it starts unfolding.
But back to the present…
And the season at hand.
And the goodness of a little neutral, with some black & white thrown in to keep things interesting!
The Rustic Turned White Washed Lamp, paired with a buffalo check lamp shade is the perfect example.
The reversible, double sided Plaid/Buffalo Check Pillows have been everywhere! I last shared them up in the loft [you can see that before & after makeover here, we added some some super-simple to do board & batten too].
And I heartlessly stole them, well… because I’m heartless. hahaha. I’m planning a fun little Christmas look up there so I figured it would be okay. Can’t help it. They go with everything (and are available in three other colors too)!
The last time you saw this little vintage dresser, it was wearing a blush pink. I gave it a very quick update and changed the accent shade to Ivory (with Maison Blanche Paint). She actually needs a good sanding and some real attention when I’ve got time. This quick fix does the trick for now though. The pink was really fun… but at the heart of things, it wasn’t me.
When it comes down to it, I’m basic. I love the timeless classics. Easy neutrals, black and white. A little vintage…
Some comfy & some cozy.
And that is okay.
A little dessert is always nice too.
Happy Autumn my friends!! May we all be blessed with blissful Fall weather. Warm homes, family, love, warm beds, cozy nights and abundant health!! xo Shannon

PS: Not shown… the kitchen that has been taken over by a (often very helpful) but messy young adult male working and attending college. LOL. Hey, gotta keep it real right? And it’s real alright. Yikes!

I have been a fan of black and white check for a long time. It works perfectly in your home. I came across your post today and I like how you are showcasing the Better Homes and Gardens items from Walmart. I always look to see what is new in the stores and now I will make it a point to check online also.

It is so easy and versatile! I love that I can throw another color in and change it up too.
Thanks so much. Yes, check online too. My store gets a very slim selection, and I find so much more online.
I’ve had super good luck and I always like everything I order 🙂

Love it! Where did you get your blanket ladder? Thanks!
Shannon at Fox Hollow Cottage says
It’s an actual vintage wood ladder. We just split it and made it into two.
We found it out junking 🙂

Thank you SO much!!
That feedback is very appreciated 🙂
Sometimes I want to just layer like crazy… but I don’t think I’ve got that in me anymore.
I’m striving for that balance between not boring, but also not a hoarder 😉 hehe

Do you have a link for the white deer throw? I have the matching tablecloth and would like to purchase it.
Shannon at Fox Hollow Cottage says
I don’t as of yet. I don’t think it’ll be released until the end of October online.
I’d keep an eye out in stores for it though, I know I will be 😉 haha
Suzanne says
Well done! This is one of the prettiest fall tours I’ve seen!…but what happened to those gorgeous blush chairs!?
Shannon at Fox Hollow Cottage says
Hi Suzanne!
I gifted on to my sister in law, she’s got it in the upper landing of her vintage home 🙂
The other is living in a fab little local air B&B. They were so, soooo pretty and I loved getting to show them to you all, but they weren’t ultimately me.
Sometimes, it’s fun to show you all something I really appreciate the beauty of, even if it doesn’t fit perfectly with my own personal style.
I can foresee doing that again as well, just to stretch myself and also to better showcase the BHG&G offerings.
Happy Autumn 🙂
Shannon

Your autumn home is a synonym for coziness, at least for me. It looks like Fall oasis with all the layers and textures around. Neutrals are definitely the best choice for your home and you combine them with black nuances in such a lovely manner. I love your style very much!
