Coastal Cottage Bathroom Makeover
There are sooo many things I could say right now.
Things like “Never give up” – “Better late than never” – or even “Good things come to those who wai procrastinate”.
I started refreshing this bathroom 2 years ago. You heard that right, two years.
Thank goodness I was contacted by Better Homes & Gardens or it might have been another 2 years. It was just the inspiration I needed!
Of course I said YES. It’s Better Homes & Gardens. I literally grew up with BH&G! The timing could not have been better either. We just finished getting moved into the new booth and I was eager to get this particular project completed and wrapped up. No really, I was.
We had previously moved the mantel into the bathroom and mounted it above the tub, I painted the walls a fresh, new grown-up shade of aqua and then… I stopped. I never did that last lil’ bit, which was the decorating part.
I know. Me? Not decorate. What madness is this!
Oh, I threw a few mason jars on the mantel, but I never really completed the room.
That all changed with one trip to Walmart!
(and a few Better Homes & Gardens at Walmart goodies!)
After looking for rugs on & off for 2 years, I found some I loved right off the bat. I absolutely have to have the rubber backed bathroom style rugs for this room, and the pattern and the grey & white is perfect. It’s exactly what I wanted.
Neutral. Not too busy, not boring. Sold!
I stocked up on fluffy bath towels too. I love white towels.
There is just something about a pure white towel!
And it’s ability to willingly accept bleach.
Something I noticed and very much appreciated was the special attention to detail with the packaging.
That tiny fold & tuck flap prevents the plastic fasteners from snagging the heck out of the towels before you can even get them out of the store. So thank you for that. My picky self noticed.
In order to keep my towels snag free, I’ve got them nestled in a metal serving tray I found over in the seasonal section with some picnic and outdoor entertaining items. I got the “galvanized metal” look but they had some colorfully fun options too. (I did sneak a little white paint on the wood handles of mine)
Never be afraid to use something in a way it might not be intended. I’ll use anything, just about anywhere, and these trays are working prefect for us!
Here I’ve got my new lanterns (both were under 15 dollars!) gathered on one. Even when I’m not taking a bath, it’s nice to light them and have a soft glow while showering.
Both are indoor/outdoor. The white one is a painted metal and the aqua is ceramic.
If I had any low hanging limbs, the white one would be extra gorge hanging outside as well! I’m sure the Deer would love it. What better way to see all my flowers they love to much? hahaha
I’ll happily keep mine indoors. All to myself.
You know I love my lanterns, and I’m sure these will be making the rounds. I’ll try not to steal them too soon though.
Next I found the necessities.
A cute soap P U M P.
and a place for S T U F F.
This Qt is a candle holder, but again… use things how you see them. I added a plant to mine!
Plus, this is the back! There is a little slot to add a photo to the front. It’s very cute actually and I’ll probably make a printable to slip in there at some point. But for now, it’s a plant holder.
Thank you so much for stopping in today to see my foot-dragging makeover!!
I’ll be back soon to share how I transformed this space:

Hugs… Barb xxx
Hi Barbara, Thank you so much. You know the cake stands are great for keeping things neat and still having counter space. I just lift it up to wipe down the counters 🙂
This is simply gorgeous. I would have never thought to put a mantel there! Love it!
I saw a mantel in a bathroom on Pinterest (with a claw foot tub) and figured I could get mine out of storage if I could find a spot for it!
Gorgeous!! Love the simple beauty with the “just right” amount of functional decor.
Shannon,
I think my heart jumped within me when I saw your marvelous Costal Bath. It takes me back to Beach Cottages in New Jersey, a time in my life when the cares and struggles of this world did not even exist! How peaceful, tranquil, and lovely. I imagine a Bubble Bath in this serene looking tub would be Heaven… Candles flickering, soft, classical music playing! What a Wonder you are! This post goes straight to my soul, I love it! Can’t wait to learn more about the how’s and why’s!
Oh my. Well that was a lovely comment!! Thank you. I’m glad it translates as relaxing.
We sure love it much better now 🙂
you didn’t mention anything about the tray that stretches across the tub. Did you ;make it or purchase it? I love it. Need one nice and large like that for my own. Your bath looks beautiful.
It’s a DIY and I’ll touch on it the the post where I’ll be breaking everything down. I made a slimmer custom one as well. They are really simple to make!! Thank you!!
