Cottage Farmhouse Christmas Dining Room
Today I’m sharing our dining room decorated for Christmas with you. It’s a little bit cottage, a little bit farmhouse, and a whole lot of festive! I’ve used a fun black & red buffalo check plaid as an accent against my everyday neutrals. And I threw in some Pacific Northwest Cranberries for good measure. I hope you enjoy it!
I’m so happy to be participating in the Christmas Room Series that the sweet & talented Ashley at Cherished Bliss arranged. It’s our last and final week, and our little group will be closing out by featuring dining rooms with you today.
Welcome to our Cottage Farmhouse Christmas Dining Room
If you are here visiting from Jenn’s at My fabulous Life, Hi there! I’m Shannon.
I blog from a cottage style bungalow on the Oregon Coast. Our home is full of an eclectic mix of vintage thrift store finds, DIY projects, painted furniture… sugar & spice and… no rules. I pretty much buy, make and decorate with what I like and then smoosh it together. So I don’t really have a particular style. And I change things on a whim.
A vintage laundry drying rack, cable knit stockings, sequins & buffalo check? Sure, why not! When the throw is a decadently weighty faux fur, how can you resist? I couldn’t! HomeGoods got me again. Perfect for sofa snuggles on chilly nights. So, actually, I really needed it.
Did that sound convincing?
With the holidays in full swing, I pulled my bar cart out. The ice bucket is holding a Christmas tree, but that can easily be evicted if ice-holding needs to be done.
If you ever have the opportunity to get a bar cart, I recommend it. I’ve used this so many ways over the years. As a night stand, and table for guests how visit, they are so versatile! It also makes our “not really a dining room” feel more like one.
They are fun to decorate too.
I stuffed my lidded glass jars with a layer of snow, and Austin favorite peppermint taffy & candy canes.
I may have over-bought a tiny bit, with him not living here this year.
I’m still learning.
I was a little extra excited to share this post with you because I finally made one of those Cranberry & candle concoctions that I’ve been meaning to put together forever.
If you follow me on Facebook, we were all laughing last week about “pinning” things on Pinterest and never getting around to them. I am guilty of it too, between my own ideas, and the ones I see, I usually have a pretty good “things to-try” list going.
This is one of those simple projects that turns out to be so rewarding because it’s just so darn pretty.
To get this look: I simply filled four small Ball mason jars with Cranberries and topped with a small votive, then filled with water. I used a larger vase I picked up at HomeGoods, and popped a Dollar Tree candle in the center, then filled with berries and added water. That was it.
Gathered together on a vintage milk glass cake plate to add height, I think it’s a great anchor for the table, and it couldn’t have been much easier… once I stopped trying to get the votives perfectly centered.
When something is frustrating, it can really steal the joy. I let perfection go, settled on good enough, and was much happier for it!! The votive police haven’t shown up to take me away, so I think I made a good call.
This set-up was my practice run for our Christmas morning breakfast table. We’ve always made a full breakfast on Christmas morning and I’m really looking forward to it, it’s definitely a tradition!
We usually do bacon, sausage, eggs, and some variety of Belgium waffles, cinnamon rolls or breakfast breads, fruit, juice, milk… and I’m thinking I might do biscuits and gravy this year. So we’ll see what the boys vote for.
In years past, we were always up early to open Christmas presents, but this is a different season in our lives. Our son is grown and out on his own now, but will be home for the holidays… we will probably be eating brunch now that I think about it!
My dad will be here spending Christmas with us again as well. He’s going to love the Santa mugs! He had one when he was a boy. In fact, I think it’s still in the cupboard at the house I grew up in.
The old world feel of the “believe” caught my eye at HomeGoods too, and I knew it need to be added to my Christmas collection.
Red, white and black seems to have become my Christmas color scheme… which works well for adding new this & thats to my existing decor and having it all play nice together. I hope y’all don’t tire of it because I think it’s here to stay. I don’t know if I could do Christmas without red?
Well friends, that’s about it for today, so I shall say goodbye for now.

HomeGoods is my favorite place to shop for my home, but in this instance I would give the certificate to my daughter to shop for her own home. She works hard for her family and deserves to shop for some pretty things for her home.

My home needs so many things…new lamps, sofa, and drapes to name a few things. Being on social security limits what can be done. But Home Goods has great selections at reasonable prices. I would love to be able to teplace some of my old with some new from Home Goods.

It would be hard to pin down how I’d spend $100, but I got to think it would involve lots of pillows and probably a dish or two!

Love Home Goods! I would spend a lot of it on gifts for deserving people that aren’t as lucky as I am. There is a homeless couple in my own community that I would love to help more. I probably would have to buy myself a little something too since my birthday is in a February.
