Cozy Cottage Winter Living Room Decorating Ideas
I’m writing this on a super stormy, blustery day, that makes our living room feel even more Winter perfect! I write about this every year, but if you are new here, I’ll catch you up. Winter in the Pacific Northwest can be mixed with some glorious days, and lots of big storms, with lots of rain. Basically, when we aren’t having a sublime “feels like Summer” day we get rain until our actual real Summer hits, which happens here much later than it does in the rest of the country. I like to honor Winter by not rushing into a Spring (our wettest, dreariest time of year) that I don’t particularly relish. I love to wrap our home in snugly comfort with all the classics, like lots of throw blankets. A decor norm for sure, and something I not only toss in baskets and on the sofa & chair because they are pretty. We use them. All.
In fact, if you follow me on Instagram you’ll know I was bundled up under 3 at once the other night!!
– Instagram is a great place to join me for quick, casual snippets of live video, often exclusive things I don’t share elsewhere.
After the holiday festivities, all my signs and decor that were blatantly Christmas were unceremoniously shoved into my decor storage room (more on that later). I deleted all my very holiday specific items except for my tree forest. And I was going to take it down the other day, and changed my mind. It’ll stand just a bit longer.
We hosted a New Years Eve party so I definitely wanted the sparkle of the tree lights, and my Cottonball Lights too! Mr Fox is enjoying being in the spotlight.
Welcome to our cozy cottage living room, and my Winter decorating ideas! Quickly and casually photographed to share with you.
My flocked trees that were on the coffee table were traded out for the bare, Wintry bottle brush trees and the little wood houses from the Hearth & Hand collection.
My pom-pom & jingle bell garland stayed put, because I love it, and it feels more Winter than expressly Christmas. The soft tones and warm wood are a calm respite after a bustling holiday season.
I plan to enjoy my B&W buffalo check for awhile longer, with no desire to rush my decor into Spring. Unless I get the urge and can’t wait. You never do know. I’m not really a planner. I like to decorate as the inspiration hits.
I DO know… that the chalk art needs to be updated.
I chalked “The best is yet to come” for our party… and I’d like to do something new, but as of yet, I’m undecided just what that might be.
I am always open to your suggestions!! So feel free to share your ideas with me in the comments. I’d love that.
I figured a snowman was Wintry so I kinda kept our favorite little guy out too.
He just got moved from center-stage.
And before you ask, I found him out junking and I can’t even remember where? I’ve had him a few years now. I wish I could tell you where you could find one because I know so many of you love him.
My Birch tree snowglobe features a gentleman Fox and a young man Fox, and I bought these dapper bow-tied cuties because they made me think of my boys. Even though Austin is full-grown man sized now. And neither wear bow ties. It makes me happy.
You guys liked my crock filled tree forest so much, that I’ll admit I kept them up a bit longer for you too! I figured I’d snap a few pictures and share them one last time for the year.
Honestly… the whole “tree thing” just feels natural for us. After all, we are in Oregon. We are surrounded by trees. We live in a forest of Evergreens and it looks like Christmas 365 days a year.
The Winter months are December, January & February… so technically, we are smack dab in the middle of Winter. I’m just not ready to drape my home in a Spring that is still far off. And for those of you getting snow, with more to come… maybe you are more content to dwell in the current season with me. I’ve really slowed down the rush-rush of the blogging world and I’ve been trying to do projects a bit more on a “normal” schedule. Not to say there is anything wrong with getting excited about the next season, I’m just talking about myself.
Brands tend to work ahead, just like retail, so if it’s for a specific post I will happily oblige. But while I can, I’ll be lingering in this season just a bit longer.
Wishing you a happy-cozy Winter from our home to yours!! xo Shannon
PS: We’ve got a bit going on behind the scenes with some changes that are going to keep us extra busy so projects might be a bit light the next several weeks. Come March, we should be full steam ahead and catching up on lots of tutorials and fresh projects to share with you!! I’ve got some big plans for 2018.

I’m content to stick with winter too. We have snow until the end of March so nests and eggs look a little odd if we push around here. Love your arrangement on the coffee table. So fresh and wintery! Thanks for one last peek. ?
Our Spring is the worst, wet and dreary for ever . (At least it feels like it)
I slide slowly into Spring. And when I do, I’ve got no idea what that will look like 😉
I think after the Holidays it’s time to just “nest” and enjoy the season (sans snow of course). Your home looks toasty and welcoming. You could change your chalkboards to “sit awhile – stay awhile” to foster the coziness of home. Happy New Year.
Rosemary, YES! I need new chalk art, I did that for NYE… and I didn’t even like it then. LOL
Happy New year 🙂
Hi Shannon- That’s such a great idea leaving up the “naked” tree. I love your black and white living room, perfect for changing decor. Do you remember where you got the fox snow globe? My little granddaughter is crazy about foxes and she would love one. Snow globe are magical aren’t they? It’s raining and yucky in Portland too!
Hi Vivian,
Oh the weather is nasty out… we’ve got rain coming in sideways. Normal for us this time of year of course. Thank you, I have so enjoyed the B&W accents.
I got that at HomeGoods, right before Christmas.
Everything looks beautiful!
Thanks so much Debbie!!
I love how you make decorating fun.
Thank you Cynthia ~ Happy New Year!!
I love your winter decor! Looks very warm and inviting and everything flows so nicely from one thing to another. Love the buffalo checks!
Where in the PNW do you live?
I’m curious to know where you keep your things when they are not in use. I’m guessing maybe you have a room in which you store things and can pull from??
We live on the coast, about 4 hours South from Portland.
I have a spare bedroom for all my decor & collections, plus all our seasonal decor as well.
We don’t have a garage, so trees, lights, everything goes in there.
It’s in need of a purge and I’m working on that now. (again) lol

Where did you get those great lights around the shelves? Love your ideas.
They are direct linked in the post, and are from Cottonball Lights – They have a slew of fun colors.
It was really hard to pick 😉
Love your cozy winter decor! I am wondering if one couldn’t achieve the look of your snowman pot with a stout, belly pot in white/cream (or said spray paint) and some vinyl snowman face stick-ons, or paint??? It is just so cute and has definitely got me thinking about how I could “get” one. Very, very cute!
I am confident you could come up with something similar!!
And it would be just as cute in its own unique way.
Shannon I just love your room! It is so bright and warm! I really like how you still have your lighted tree forest:) I’m going to have to do that at my house because I really hate putting the tree away after Christmas. Thanks for sharing!
I kept it naked this year, decorated it for our NYE party, then took that stuff off to enjoy a bit longer.
Our house isn’t really large so having a big, full size tree requires really moving the furniture around and I didn’t want to do that this year 😉
P.S
I’m looking forward to the chalkboard signs tutorial, awww
Thank you!! Have a lovely week ~ Shannon
Truth to be said, It looks and feels complete. Really, it looks aaaweesommeee, Shannon. Everything in the room and dining is perfectly matched. The dining area looks like oceanic, The small Christmas trees on the table look airy and soft. Especially the tree decoration with the small pillow like ornamentals are great and I completely love all of it. Thank you, you’re awesome as always. Keep doing what you do Shannon. Love you, and happy new years.:)
