EPIC Room Flip: Beginning a Teen Boy’s Bedroom Makeover
It’s Teen Boy Bedroom Ideas, Time Two!
Jessica at Mom4real.com and I both have teen boys. After a little chatting, we discovered both our boys rooms were sorely in need of a little TLC. An idea was born! We decided to do a dual makeovers and change up the boys rooms at the same time. It’s so much more fun to do a project with a friend, even if it’s long distance. Lucky us, we get the chance to work with the fabulous 55 Downing Street to make our boys rooms unique, hardworking and just right for them. All while sharing it with you along the way. Jessica is sharing her plans today as well, so pop over for even more teen boy decorating inspiration!
We have made a lot of changes over the years but one thing that has stayed relatively the same is Austin’s room. Mostly due to the fact that I have a kid who hates change. I know. It doesn’t seem possible. My child. The child of Mrs. It’sbeen5secondsiamsooverthat. But it’s true.
So true in fact, that when he was little and we traded in our red mini van for a newer, fully loaded version, that child told me everyday for forever that he wanted the old van back. Like seriously, everyday. Even when we weren’t even in the new mini van. Anytime of day or night I would hear; “Mom, I want our red van back”. After forever, which is a really long time (or when my magical mom patience wore out) I forget which came first, I finally broke down and told him when he grew up and got a job he could save all his money and go buy the red van if he really wanted it back. I wouldn’t be getting any mom of the year award for that one but it had to be done. For my sanity.
Fast forward to present day, add a little cajoling, and I’ve got him on board to give his room a little fluff. When we started looking at the 55 Downing Street site he actually got into it. It was great! We were online shopping together. Every moms dream. No, really though, it was fun. I tried to hang back and let him select things that appealed to him. After all, we didn’t want my interpretation of what his room should look like.
Let’s Take A Peek
These are a few of the things we checked out closer while we were cruising. We found an eclectic selection of merchandise, so much more than I imagined and lots that we liked. We started with accents and such… just sort of getting our feet wet. A mirror was a must for a last quick check before leaving for school, activities and such. This one had a great, masculine feel.

We both thought this box was ultra cool. The galvanized metal… the worn wood and the rope handle. Definitely boy approved. Mom too I guess.

We sort of looked at everything. Bookends, Side Tables… Bedding.
He’d love a desk and his computer in his room, but I feel like we would never see him again. We “compute” family style. All our computers are in the den so even if we are plugged in. It’s together! Great selection though and I indulged him by looking.(If only I wasn’t a mean mom… )

We found there was something for every taste and price range. It got hard to concentrate a few times. You know, I sort of got side tracked a tiny bit. But come on!

And again. Come ON! ( Mamma needs a new desk)

Full looks guys. Chairs, Desks and Accessories.
Then is hit us! He’s going to want a gaming chairs in his room! He’s always been big into gaming so if we look at the best gaming chairs and pick one that will go well with the room, he’ll be over the moon! That’s something we’re going to have to look into that more so for now we thought we’d look at beds. While Austin has a fantastic mattress, the box spring that came with it is uber squeaky for some reason, and he does not like it at all. (See how I did that, instead of saying he hates it?) That was for you mom.I knew it was time to replace Austin’s mattress for his comfort, and I hastily started doing research on the Best online mattress manufacturers and ones without any squeaky springs! Of course, I completely forgot that 55 Downing Street would be able to help us out with this. They have beds ga-lore! Manly looking ones too. Like this charcoal linen tufted bed.

I could show you the whole site but I’ll stop here for now and get back to our plans.
The first thing we had to do before we even thought about getting anything new in the room, was clean, purge and make room. At my sons age, I was not going to do all the work alone. I totally made him help. He did really well too. He dug in, got serious and deleted. He got this large, packed piece knocked down to fit in two medium sized containers.
These 2 pieces were a mistake. We tried to make them work but they were not right for the room. They outlived their welcome for sure and there days were numbered. His room is not over large and I had a bit of trouble getting any full room shots. You are not missing much though. In addition to what I’ve shown you, there is a queen size bed and a dresser. Very average.
You know, I often get ideas… and sometimes they grow a little. Okay. A lot.
Like this one:
“Let’s freshen up Austin’s room”.
BECAME
“Let’s flip Austin’s room and the decor storage room”!
Oh I don’t know why.. because I’m bored and the decor storage room has 37,000 things in it! It’ll be… EPIC. (aka: an epic MESS) If anything, I’m consistent. Ha. I do make one heck of a mess when I start tearing into things.
So we completely emptied Austin’s old room and the flip began.
We’ll be able to show you some of the things we selected soon. I don’t dare open anything as I’ve got a whole room to paint first. Ceiling to base boards. And someone is going to be helping me with that too. Got to get those diy skills leveled up!
PS: I’ll be back soon to share the off-shoot of this makeover, the new home decor storage room, as soon as I get all the elements of the room complete. You can see the old Decor Storage Room Here.

I think this is the perfect thing for you two to do together! I would be having a blast that’s for sure. I’m also with you on the no-compy-in-the-bedroom.
I’m excited to see the final product! I love the last row of the chair, mirror, and desk selection.
Shannon at Fox Hollow Cottage says
It’s turning out to be very fun, and I like that we are doing it together!! The last time his room was “decorated” was like 7-8 years ago when we moved in. He outgrew it, we ditched it… and became sort of anti-decorated.

My two younger sons are in desperate (and I really mean desperate) need of a room redo. I don’t even know where to start ~ I get hives when I go in their room (well….it feels like hives but I think it may be a panic attack). I love what you’ve shared so far. I’ll be following along! I wish we lived closer….I would love for you to come and have your way with their room!
