Farmhouse Fresh Diy: Make a Fence Picket Coat Rack
Happy April!
I’m Shayna from The Wood Grain Cottage and I’m back to share a new project with ya! My husband and I have been busy working on a little mudroom makeover and today I’m showing how I made our fence picket coat rack.
We just installed new planking on the walls and a new shelf for organizing, so the next thing we needed was a way to organize our coats, hats, etc.
I wanted something that had numbers, so I started with modeling clay and made 1 square as my starter…
Then I just trimmed down the others to match…
24 hours later, they were dry…
Then I sanded down all the edges…
Next, I trimmed down a fence picket to 32″. Fence pickets happen to look great (I’ve used them here and here) and they’re cheap!
I used our electric sander to sand it smooth, then I stained it with Minwax Early American stain.
Once the stain was dry, I rubbed on a light coat of wax and set the hooks and clay squares in place…
I used my Silhouette cutting machine to cut out black vinyl numbers…
Then I measured and stuck them in place…
I attached the metal hooks with screws, then used Gorilla Glue to attach the clay squares…
I pressed each square in place and held them down firmly for a few minutes. After about 15 minutes, they were stuck…
I used sawtooth hangers on the back…
After that, I hung it up…
I am so absolutely smitten with it…
And those numbers and hooks… sigh…
I’m a big lover of white and wood, so this basically makes my heart gooey.
Our little mudroom has come such a long way in a short period of time…
And pretty soon, it’s going to be organized and efficient and wonderful…
Here’s to putting everything together!
Until next time… You can find me on Pinterest, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter!
And be sure to stop by The Wood Grain Cottage to say hi!
So simple and cute Shayna and I LOVE the numbering!!
I LOVE how this turned out – I have been wanting to do something like this for a while now. This may be the nudge I needed.
I love those little clay tags too! Didn’t she do a great job?
Love it! And the clay tags are so creative! Make me one 😉
