Fresh Winter Home Decorating Ideas
Today I’m sharing how I take our little cottage home from the festiveness of Christmas, and dress it up in warmth and coziness for Winter. If you like simple and easy to duplicate home decorating ideas, you are in the right place. Let’s get our Winter on!
Hello my sweeet Foxes! We had a sunny day, and you know what that means… I got to take pictures.
Say hello to Winter 2021 at the cottage.
I kept things simple, while adding lots of warm layers, twinkle light and candles. All to chase the Winter blues far, far away!
I started right in my living room, and filled my console table with my Winteriest trees — all snowy, bleached and bare. I added branches and some faux Magnolias to my wood ginger jar, used those iron candle sticks that I love everywhere, and some shed antlers.
Did you know Deer naturally shed their antlers in Winter? They do, and they are dropped on the forest floor. So, no Deer were harmed for my decorating.
It all got topped it off with some tiny fairy lights. I love this set because it plugs-in. So I can have it on from the time I get up, until I retire. Without having to worry about burning through batteries!
The sofa is dressed in sweaters, (faux) leather and fur. So much more chic than my wardrobe, for certain! These are all from my pillow stash and I didn’t get anything new for this Wintery look. Just added in those textures that felt the coziest for Winter.
The woven trunk is something that I found at HomeGoods last Fall, and I knew it would be a great addition to the living room, to hold allll the extra blankets I love to use when it gets chilly.
The sweet set of ottomans I added last Fall, were fast to become a favorite. And because they are on the smaller side, they tuck-in and shimmy all-over with ease. Perfect in a smaller home for sure! They are also extremely comfortable and I love how light they are, making it easy to pop one where ever I am. Putting my legs up is really good for me, and this makes it easy to do!
Want to see how well the ottomans tuck under a console table? Just [click here]. I got them from Grandin Road, and they come in several colors.
When I put the glass Christmas tree that was inside the big brass lantern away, I replaced it with a seed-glass vase, and then stuffed it with a string of white lights. I definitely wanted some glow to stick around. I can tell I’m going to have a hard time moving this lantern anywhere else. The scale just seems to fill this corner perfectly!
We use our farm table a lot, so again… SIMPLE.
There isn’t anything on our reclaimed wood dining table that isn’t easy to move for family meals, impromptu game nights, crafts… or if I want to paint, I can set up my tabletop easel.
I love to really rest my mind after the holiday, to sort of pause & reset. Keeping things more on the bare side… and kind of stark, allows my interior to mimic nature, as it rests too.
Well… except for my Endless Summer Hydrangea, that is still blooming. It started, and just never stopped. Oh it slowed down. But I think it’s determined to have a bloom until in starts back up in the Spring. It did not get the memo! [click here for a closer look, and to tour my flower garden]
Jimmy made the live edge dining bench and I adore having it here at our table! Especially after he recently sanded it down for me, and I refinished it with a new stain color. I’m telling you, colors & tones make all the difference.
I’m also telling you, I am such a lucky woman!!!! He always does such sweet things for me. Just the things that mean so much to me.
I asked about what I should do on the brick wall after Christmas, and you guys were pretty split between the metal & wood shelf or the chunky white console table. But someone was so smart, and suggested using this until Spring, and then switching things out! I kept it to myself so as not to influence, but it’s exactly how I was leaning, so I did just that!
It’s funny how some things just fit.
I realized after I got everything where and how I wanted it, that I used my faux olive trees in exactly the same spot last Winter!
Suppose oftentimes, we just like what we like, right?
I hope 2021 is treating you well thus far! I’ve already gotten a year older, as my birthday falls very, very early in January.
So I’ve only got downhill to go from here. lol

I’ve searched and searched for a wood & metal shelf with drawers on the bottom like mine, with no luck. But I did find this reasonably priced one [click here]
Of course , let me be that one with an annoying question. Where did your electric fairy light come from?
Your house is fantastic.
Never! Asking a question is not annoying, I actually enjoying conversing 🙂
I’ve ahd those for a few years and I don’t recall exactly where I got them.
Chances are I picked them up during the holidays, but I know you can find them on Amazon!
You can try these, they seem very similar https://amzn.to/2N3PytF (affiliate link)
Oh, and I forgot to mention that the dining table bench is simply gorgeous! How special that your hubby made it for you! Sigh, what a gift to be married to such a talented man! I have a wonderful husband of 47 years, but bless his heart, he can’t build anything…..but he can plan events for thousands of people!
Everyone has their strengths right? We all have unique gifts 🙂
I do love the bench very much!
Shannon 🙂
Your home is so cute, warm and welcoming……it doesn’t matter if it is small. I’ve seem expansive homes that don’t have the warmth of yours! Beautiful job! I love your natural touches with baskets, etc. I’m curious where you got the Olive trees and that deer print throw on the white ottoman? Also, do you not use your what appears to be the front door near your dining table? It makes sense to have that near your kitchen so you must have swapped rooms? Anyway….enjoyed your winter decor tour a lot! I’m going to have another look!
Hi Toni!
Thank you very much 🙂 The Olive trees are from Ballard Designs. I’ve ahd them a few years now but I think they still carry them.
The throw was a BH&G find from Walmart a few years ago. Our table is right next to our kitchen. We don’t hae a formal dining room.
Our house is almost 100 years old and it’s got an odd front entry layout that doesn’t work for much so we use it the best we can.
Happy New Year!
BEST, Shannon
Loving the range of textures in the rooms!
Thank you Donna ~ Happy New Year!
I love your home and all your ideas. I cant wait to copy a few. I really would love to know where you purchased the metal and wood bookshelf from, the one with the numbered drawers at the bottom. I so love love love it!
Thank you Lynore!
That was purchased and an independent local shop. I have looked and looked for something similar in metal and wood, but can’t find anything with drawers!
I will keep my eye out and make sure to share if I do!
Shannon 🙂
A very welcoming home! Where did you purchase your bar cart? Hope you have a great 2021!
Hello, and please excuse the delay in response!
Your comment for a little lost.
That is from Target and I’ve had it for years.
It’s actually a really basic style and I see similar ones frequently 🙂
your house looks absolutely lovely…. every area… i just noticed your front door in this blog…. how clever you were in your painting…. i have never seen this idea before!! happy new year!!!
Hello Lynne 🙂
THANK YOU!!!! Our house is almost 100 years old and the layout provides no entryway, it’s just open the door and BAM, you’ve in the house.
I so appreciate that. It was my goal to try to camouflage it by painting it that way.
Absolutely Beautiful and Cozy! Thanks for having us in, Shannon, and have a great weekend.
Thank you so much Miche, you are always so sweet to me!
Happy weekend 🙂
Love how cozy and inviting your winter decor is. I really like the twinkle lights too, it just makes such a nice glow that I always miss when all the Christmas decor comes down. Your home look beautiful.
Same here Marty, the last few years I’ve found a way to leave a few up. It’s such a lick me up on gloomy day 🙂
Happy New Year sweetie!!
Very pretty and cozy! Happy Birthday. with greetings and blessings from Vermont…..Brrrr……
Thank you so much!
And thank you for the birthday wishes 🙂
