How To Paint A Door Fast And Easy –
Hello Foxy Friends!
For those of you who marvel at the buttoned-up from top to bottom room reveals & jaw dropping DIY projects… and wonder; “How does she do it all?”
I don’t.
I do wonder how others do it though!!
hahahahaha
Although I doubt you wonder about that here, because I definitely do all my projects in “regular girl” time!
I’ll tell ya, I have been on a mojo search mission since I got home for Alabama (which I promise I will be sharing soon, just on a Shannon schedule). Between coming home to a pretty darn sick hubby, putting the house back in order, having Lumberjacks here and then some family health issues that required out of town travel… I couldn’t seem to get back in my groove? I was like; “Helllloo… groove, err… “mojo”… where are you???” I was greeted with silence.
Obviously because I didn’t even know it’s damn name.
Well, here were are, over a week later and it’s finally come around.
To catch you up, the story goes like this… I got the bright idea one night to paint my door! The interior of my front door to be exact. I consulted y’all on Instagram. (which I love by the way!!!!)
After playing HERE that evening, and trying on a bunch of fun paint colors without ever buying a sample, picking up a brush or needing any software (it’s super user friendly & free), I broke out my brush and got busy! Sometimes, there is no time like the present and I was in the mood.
As much as I loved the aqua color (it’s Peacock Plume), I wanted something neutral. You know me, I love to change my accessories around. It’s got to work with just about anything & everything if it’s permanent at my house!
I went grey and I am really happy with it. The old cottage green color was a few years old and it was time for a new neutral. The new color is Sherwin Williams in Pussywillow. It’s a great compliment to my decor and I think it’ll be good for the foreseeable future.
Now on to the quick painting tips!
I’ve painted the door several times inside and out. It’s a real peach to paint. (not!) Each panel has a tiny recessed section that makes it difficult to get enough paint in to cover, without it wanting to drip. I’ve tried a few different ways, and the night it went grey, I did something different. It was the fastest I’ve ever painted it and I thought to myself; “Self, you better blog this one”. So I am.
- Start with a clean, dry surface. I wiped the door down with mild dish soap and water, then dried it off.
- I did not use a primer because both the existing color, and the new one were both a mid-tone. If you are doing a major color change, I suggest it for the best results, or plan to do multiple coats. This was done in one-coat!
- I got my supplies together. Paint (Sherwin Williams in Pussywillow), 2 (Purdy) brush sizes, my fav paint container (it has a magnet that holds your brush and it’s great for low hand fatigue) & Scotch Blue Painters Tape.
- I started by first painting all the recessed channels in the door panels.
- Next, I filled in each door panel.
- Then I painted the rest of the door, working in the direction of the wood grain. I started at the top and worked my way down and across in sections left to right.
- I covered my deadbolt and knob with Scotch Blue Painters Tape. To save on tape, you can cover the actual knob with tinfoil as well. I left mine uncovered, I’m a pretty careful painter. Plus, we need new hardware anyhow! I don’t expect this to be around for long.
- Note: I did not paint the thin strip/edge between the front & back of the door. It is currently black to match the front portion of the door.
- When I completed the bottom portion of the door, I removed the tape (pulling off at a slight angel) and the door was done. In record time!
From start to finish, I had a new door color on in about 30 minutes. That counts wiping down, throwing down a tarp (or sheet, whatever) and grabbing my paint and supplies as well!
This is of course the next day, it got dark before I could get pictures since I started in the evening. I think the grey looks great with my wall color and our plantation shutters. I looked at it about ten times that night and sent pictures to my mom.
I love that she can text and exchange pictures with me!
She sends me photos of lots of the cute stuff she does, and it sure makes it feel like we are closer than being in different states. Like these SUPER CUTE candle sticks she did over in shads of aqua and finished with Maison Blanche Lime Wax in Chalk White. She loves that stuff as much as I do. We both like to put white wax on everything. Like Mother like Daughter… hahaha.
That is it for now friends… Mother-Daughter wax obsessions and a quick way to paint your door. It’s all I got.
I think my mojo is back so I hope to see you soon with a new project or tip.

If it wasn’t, I’ll try to do better next time… {winks}
Just don’t expect a recipe… I like to eat… cooking, not so much.
Oh! And this isn’t a sponsored post. Just sharing what I used & some things I love.

Hi Shannon. I love when the inside of a door is painted. Yours is fabulous! LOVE the tutorial too…. and your sweet mom’s candlesticks! YOU GO MOM!
Awe thanks. With the white walls, it needs color for sure. I SO love my awesome mom :))) I’ll tell her you liked them.
I don’t see painting a door in mt near future but in case it happens, I’ll be ready – thanks to you!
Don’t you just hate it when the paint drips from the corner? The first couple of times I can catch the drip but then it begins to dry just enough so that when I brush it it becomes a dimple . . .
xo
Yes. I thnk doing all the little details first worked perfectly. Plus an angled brush. 😉
Thank you AGAIN for inspiring me to just “do it”! My raisin red door is lovely outside but inside needs a more neutral color for the tan /beige walls with oak wood trim. CLASH! I have considered gray, but thinking tan will be a better fix. WILL do the exterior in that lovely aqua by end of summer. This method of painting the recesses first is a winner. BTW, I learned on my front door to ALWAYs pay extra and get the paint that has PRIMER in it! 😀
Oh gosh ours was a orange-y brick red for some time before I did the cottage green. All in time right? Oh I know I would love AQUA!! But I have commitment issues 😉 hahaha – Would love to see an after picture!!
Love! Love! Love! Life is much easier with simple things!
Very. True.
Happy weekend to YOU!!
Hi, thanks for the post. The after playing HERE link does not work. Should it take you to Sherwin Williams?
I will fix that! Thank you – here it is again: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/visualizer/
