Loft Guest Bedroom Makeover Reveal
In today’s post, you’ll find that the loft guest bedroom makeover reveal all started with ripping out the old beige carpet. It involved some serious scrubbing to reveal the beauty of the wood floors beneath it, adding a DIY board and batten accent wall treatment, lots of fresh white paint, and getting it dressed with a brand new metal daybed and useful accessories & furnishings to unveil it’s full potential.
It’s Loft Guest Bedroom Makeover Reveal Day!!!! If you’ve been following along since the beginning, you’ll know the loft was a beige carpeted, glorified dumping ground for excess furniture & decor that didn’t have a home. One-by-one as we started working on the rooms at The Little Cottage, everything sort of got shoved out of sight up into the loft. I knew it couldn’t last, but I kept contributing to it anyway. I’m sure some of you can relate. And if not, please don’t judge me too harshly.
B E F O R E
bare, with fresh paint and board & batten
We started with a clean slate by clearing out all the clutter, taking up the carpet, and working with what we’ve got for now. You can read all the how’s & why’s and get the details on our new board and batten by [clicking here].
I think by now, you all know how much I love my monthly assignments with Better Homes & Gardens at Walmart. I so enjoy sharing my personal selections, and spotlighting the vast line of furnishings and home decor available in-store and online with all of you! It’s always a favorite post, and I know we all appreciate the great quality and the affordable prices! I also love that the monthly assignments often light a fire under me to check something off of my to-do list. For this months sponsored assignment, I choose to dress the newly refreshed and naked loft guest bedroom.
Before I go any further, I feel like I need to say something. DECORATE NOW. Don’t wait. Life is so short and it goes by so quickly. If I waited until I could have all my dream finishes & dream furnishings, I’d be frozen in time. Instead, do what you can, with the spaces you’ve got, and the budget at hand. And be happy in each stage. This might not be the forever look for the loft, but it’s a start. All you really need is function, and whatever form (decor) you can afford. The decor can always come later, and be layered in. But please don’t be afraid to simply start.
I started out with the most important item for our space. A bed! I really wanted two twins, but a daybed made so much more sense for the space, primarily because ceiling height wouldn’t allow for double bed placement. And it’s higher than it looks in these photos, promise! You can actually sit on the bed (as it’s placed here) and not bump your head.
Though I’m not using it presently, I bought the daybed set that included the trundle frame. It’s tucked away until the budget or necessity calls for a second mattress.
That is… unless another idea I’ve got for it comes into play first. Some major sweet talking and some extra time might be in order to make that project happen.
Even though we put a brand new light in the ceiling, it’s always nice to have a lamp right next to the bed. This little metal stool I scored for a dollar is just the right size for it to perch on, and doesn’t take up too much room.
BONUS — the lamp has a USB port so you can charge your phone, tablet, Kindle, etc… right in bed!
This vintage shade of aqua & that soft brassy gold is so delicious! It’s just a lamp, but it’s so cute right???
I needed to be a contortionist with Stretch Armstrong arms or have a reallllly expensive wide angel lens to capture this tiny room. Instead I wedged myself back in the corner behind the bed with my neck at a crazy angle and did my best. LOL.
The wicker chair works so well up here because it’s comfy enough to sit a spell, or perfect for tossing clothes on. But most importantly, it’s really light. So it was easy to get it up here, and to move around!
I added the little trio of bowls nestled on the wood tray (sitting in the window sill) for tiny things we all seem to travel with. So often, you need a safe place to set those things, especially when you are out of your element and away from your everyday routine.
This console table was something I already owned, and it fits the room really well because it’s so slim. Although it wasn’t nearly as easy to get up here as that wicker chair!
I’m still playing with this spot, it’s definitely a work in progress. I’ve got to feel the room for a little bit longer before I settle on all the little details. I think I’ll end up leaving the bottom shelf empty for pillow storage when the bed is unmade. It’s nice to supply empty surfaces for your guests so they’ve got places to put their things when visiting. I think it can be really easy to over decorate a guest room.
Normally before guests arrival, I like to put a basket or tray of snacks and goodies together, but since I have no eminent guests I skipped that step.
Short of balancing on top of the pony wall… this was as far back as I could get to show you the daybed. I felt like a peeping Tom trying to snap a photo from behind my big Ficus.
So… I ended up shimmying everything around.
You just have to see how cute the bed is.
It’s kind of the most important thing in the whole room!
Oh and I put tiny fairy lights in the Ficus plant. Which now, it’s easy to spot the cord since I moved it and it shifted. Gah. Sort of takes away from the mystery. haha. Anyhow. Aren’t they so sweet?
Those 12 gallon crocks are no joke! Whew. So heavy!
Only problem is… now I don’t know which way I like the bed best?
And I decided I need a bigger rug. The floors are great (well, I love them) but I think a bigger rug would feel more comfy~cozy. Especially if I leave the bed like this. What do you think? I love your opinions!
I feel like to hooks won’t be as well utilized with the bed up against the board and batten wall. Hmm… I think I’m going to be up here moving things around like I’m playing with doll house furniture, and that’s okay. None of it’s glued to the floor! And options are a wonderful thing.
With this set-up, it allows for a luggage rack. Which I always love to supply in a guest room! This one even has pegs on each side, though you can’t see them in this shot. So handy for a coat, belt, handbag, etc…
This is kind of what I had in mind for the pillows. You could stuff them on the shelf when you un-make the bed to sleep at night. Speaking of pillows — aren’t they so cute? They are the same pillow. It has two different sides! The buffalo check, and the XL plaid.
Okay, that’s it for now! I’m looking forward to fiddling a bit and getting it all just-so. Something about the space feels magical. I don’t know if it’s because the kids all played up here and had sleepovers and so much fun… or if it’s that some of my Mother In Law’s spirit is still flitting about. She was magical, to be sure. Perhaps a bit of both.
I hope you guys like the new improved loft. It’ll be our only guest room, because we happily forfeited the main-floor guest room to Austin, who is home for the Summer working. He’ll be starting school in the Fall and we couldn’t be more excited for him! And this mama is just fine having him back here in town for a bit. xo Shan

The room is darling! of all the designers I follow YOU are my favorite!
Thank you so much Patty! I shouldn’t be so tickled by this comment, but I’ll admit I am. ☺️
What a sweet and inviting room! It’s so light and airy. I love those vintage touches. You have great taste.
I always have to have a few of my junking finds in my rooms. Can’t be too perfect ? haha.
Thank you!!
Shannon,
I LOVE your loft guest room make over!
I agree, decor with what you have and continue to accumulate decor
as you find the desired pieces and accessories!
I LOVE this ” I wedged myself back in the corner behind the bed
with my neck at a crazy angle and did my best. LOL.”
I have done this. . .also, backed into the closet with my back
up against the wall. . .just to get that ONE photo!
I like the wicker chair placed next to the long console table best!
I’ll be watching for updates as they become available!
You’re off to an amazing start!
Pat
The room is only so big, so I could only smush back so far ? Thanks for your thoughts on the wicker chair placement! I’ve got one more configuration I want to try.
Really enjoyed this adorable room! Bed looks great under the slanted wall. We do that alot here in New England. ?
Oh I bet! I’m sure the homes are so quaint.
Love it so sweet ❤
What a cute space you have created! I also love the bed the first way you had it. It just seem to fit the alcove and doesn’t cut up the floor space. You are so right about do it now. May I also add use it now. I am almost 73 and am downsizing (if my house ever sells). We have plans to build a farmhouse type house that was Southern Livings ‘s house of the year a few years ago. It will have a tiny house attached to the sunroom and I have many ideas for it. If I am around long enough I plan on using all those pretty sets of china daily instead of waiting for whenever.. Nobody will want them when I am gone and I love each one. I even have my grandmother’s limoge set that is white, handpainted with gold and her initials. I am her namesake so it was left to me. I won’t use it daily but I will use it. Having only one unmarried son, I need to enjoy it. No other family member will want it. I wish you lived nearby I have always loved decorating and you are like the daughter I always wished I had.
RUTH! I somehow missed this comment, and my husband actually caught it! When he read it he knew I must not have seen it, as he knew I would have gotten back to you. This just melted my heart. You are so sweet to me. My mom and I are 20 years apart, and she is close to your age. I will be like you, with just my son. He is a blessing to us, but much different than a daughter, for sure. I hope you are moving forward with the sell of your home and building that farmhouse 🙂 Cheers to using all the things and enjoying them while we can. Many blessing to you, and I hope you are feeling well. Thank you for your sweet comments and support!! xo Shannon
I like the bed the way you had it originally in the pics. The room is really lovely and full of light!
Thanks for your vote Jill! The skylight helps with that. Even on gloomy days it’s pretty bright over at The Little Cottage 🙂
Love that floor, Shannon!!!! Boohoo the lamp and pillow are sold out but I was able to get the lantern! Question though: I always want to decorate places like this like attics and lofts (because your right they are so magical!!!) But then I’m like but then where do you put all your stuff stored in there?!! Lol! Looks beautiful as always. And really thank you for keeping things simple for us who maybe don’t have all the talent other bloggers do. You make it easy to follow along❤
Megan did you enter your email to be notified when they are back in stock? I do that, and several times have been able to purchase at a later date. If you go into the store, there are also several lights with the USB function too. It’s such a great feature! I re-homed everything that was in the loft. If you follow me on Instagram. In my saved stories [https://www.instagram.com/stories/highlights/18003994360163653/], you can follow the whole loft project and I share everything that was up there (oh my)! It was either sold in the garage sale, sent to hospice thrift, given to my sister in law, or put in my main decor storage room. Thank you! I sometimes feel like I’m falling short on the “wow factor” because my projects are on the simpler side.
Hey!! I’m not on Instagram but I will enter my email there. Thank you!!! And your stuff always has wow factor!!!
Thank you so much. Yes, I tend to share little video snippets there because it’s a really convenient platform for it.
I agree, don’t wait. Just cleaning out the space opens up the creativity and ideas. Nice job.
It’s so true. And just mentally it’s wonderful. Knowing that’s not a loft of chaos any longer 😉 haha
I think you did a great job! LOVE the lamp and the way you styled everything! This might sound weird..in the pic you used on FB, the hook on the wall behind the chair is the one that drew me here. It’s funny how that one single hook in the pic sort of gives the space definition….i.ie. you know it will be used for something in the room and there are so many things that can go on the hook! I thought it would look great in our guest room but I can’t find the link for either the hooks or the 12 gallon crock? Thanks!!
LAURA I love you! LOL – Those hooks make the wall don’t they? I picked those up at Target on clearance, Hearth And Hand line (at least a year ago) with no idea where I was going to use them. They were like $4.00 and I bought three. They worked perfect here, and I agree. Super handy! The crock is vintage. You can find those hunting around thrift, tag and estate sales. Even Craig’s List. I often buy imperfect ones (for a lot less) because I don’t care if they’ve got a chip, etc… We have an 8, 10 and 12 gallon. And assorted smaller crocks. I’ve never been able to find a 1 gallon. I understand those are the most rare. OH, and some stores sell reproduction as well. Like Ace and other hardware stores.
I Googled reproduction crocks for you – https://www.google.com/search?q=reproduction+crocks&rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS839US839&oq=reproduction+crock&aqs=chrome.0.0j69i57j0l3.4407j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
SO CUTE AND FUNCTIONAL!! I LIKE THE BED AT AN ANGLE BUT THAT’S JUST ME.
GREAT JOB!!
I contemplated leaving it, but it ate up too much of the real estate. No room for the chair or the luggage stand that way.
And thank you!! 🙂
Wow, the whole loft turned out amazing. I truly love the floors and the window…. and the bed and the lamp ♥
Your styling is fabulous and well, to be honest, I just want to come and stay and put my bag on that luggage stand – lol.
Hi Kerryanne! Eventually, I’d love to replace that window for a casement style, but only if it happens to fall into my lap 😉 The main house windows and repairs sucked up all my project money. haha. You really should come stay! I’d be happy to host you.
Wow! The loft bedroom turned out AMAZING! First off I am totally crushing over those floors. People spend all kinds of $$$$ to get that look. Next the daybed with trundle is perfect – and the price is so reasonable. We had two twin beds and a trundle a few years back and it really came in handy. Can’t wait to see what you do with yours.
The aqua lamp with the USB port is a very pretty and practical. We have ports built into our nightstands and they are a lifesaver.
I hear what you’re saying about the rug but I’d be hesitant to cover up any more of that gorgeous floor than necessary. Maybe keep a lighter look like the rug you have pictured in summer and get a bigger, warmer one for fall/winter?
Love the white suitcase and the luggage rack is darling! I agree with you on giving guests some empty spaces for their stuff. I have to force myself to not overdecorate.
The board and batten Gives lots of texture to that space too. Well done!!!!
Terri, your nightstands sound perfect! I read in bed and my Kindle wants that 😉 hehe
I’m on a major spending freeze (no paid days off for recovery) so I’m trying to make due with only what I have right now.
I’m sure my mom and I will work on a project or two when she is here helping out after my surgery. Maybe we will re-cover the dining chairs Jim stripped for me?
Oh they are looking so good! (I haven’t shared them yet) Thank you for always leaving such wonderful comments! I treasure them 🙂 Shan
I love love love it. You are so right about decorating now instead of waiting til you have everything you want. I am doing that with our home. You have given me more ideas to use.
Part of the fun is never being done right? We are always moving forward 🙂
Sharing this on the weekend edit over at Everyday Edits. I want a loft! laura
Have a great weekend Laura!
