Our Kitchen Makeover Plans are Happening
It all started last year when our new fridge leaked and damaged our kitchen floor. It got Jim and I thinking that when we replace the kitchen floor and the matching sun room floor, why not get new flooring in the entire upper living area and have everything match? I love it when we “think”.
So… we are getting brand new wood floors.
(I guess as opposed to old used floors?)
Anyhow, I am so excited!!!! Not for the mess and the work, but you know, for the “after” part. We dreamed about it. Okay I dreamed about it. We saved, we’re planning and soon, we’ll purchase!
So, Jim and I have a hot Home Depot date when I return from California. We’ll check out some flooring in person while we are up in Eugene. I’m not trying to rush my visit with my family at all, but it’ll be something extra fun to look forward to when I get home. I hope I don’t get too overwhelmed with choices though!
As we do with most of our projects, we plan and gather information first.
So until then, I’ve been having a ball finding inspiration and checking out reviews online. Maybe that’ll help narrow down what we want to buy knocking a few things out of the running. It usually helps and we like to research before we buy.
I think I might have floors on the brain for a while… you’ve been warned. haha
I love dark floors… and white kitchens!
I know the floors will be in the living room too, but I’m just super focused on the kitchen aspect.
So obvious in my: “Cottage Farmhouse Kitchens” post.
and here in my: Kitchen Love Pinterest Board
I think we’ll peek at sinks while we are out shopping too. Ours has just taken a beating. The bottom is so scratched and the finish is worn off. I’ve had stainless and porcelain and frankly, I am pretty torn as to what to replace it with.
What do you guys have? Do you like it, and if so why?
I like this, it’s a beauty. It’s about twice what ours cost. I wonder if it would last twice as long?
Well, actually, what I REALLY like is this… but that is a whole nother can of worms!!!
We are not talking new counter tops. Yet {winks}
More a “dream” sink then a realistic option. I’ll settle for one with no scratches.
So that is my exciting (to us) news.
New floors… and (hopefully) a new sink.
and new hardware… and a few new light fixtures. lol
All in time though. Right? It’s fun to have things to look forward to.
If my house was perfect. I think I would be dreadfully bored!!!!
But I feel like I need to pinch myself. I can’t believe I’m going to have a pretty, dark wood floor in my kitchen. If I think about having it in the living room… and over by the fireplace too, I might just pop!
As always, thanks for stopping by!!
I’ll be sharing my favorite room tomorrow with Kim at Savvy Southern Style.
Stop in and say Hello! if you get a chance.
Shannon,
I have wood floors throughout my home and love them especially in the kitchen. So easy to keep clean and pretty. Have fun picking out all the cool stuff. I am sure it will all be so beautiful.
Kris
What FUN … it’s going to be fabulous, Shannon! And, of course, I’m totally envious. 🙂 Can’t wait to watch the progress.
How exciting!! It’s going to be so fun to watch the process!! Congrats!!~~Angela
Glad to read of your excitement over the new kitchen. I’m with you on dark floors with white kitchens…especially wide plank dark floors in any room. Good luck on getting it altogether and being happy with all that you and hubby have chosen.
Where in California are you visiting? I live in the Central Valley a.k.a. the desert and in a very, very small trailer. My ex-hubby spent some of his teen-age years in Eugene, OR and loved it. I wish I could visit Oregon as I have a cyber-friend living there in the country side which is so beautiful and green and hilly. We call her place “The Shire”.
I am hopping for some fat, wide planks! I’d love a real vintage, farmhouse style with lots of flaws, lol. But we will see what the budget allows? I’ll be heading all the way down to Southern California. Yes, lots of Oregon is very green and lush! You would enjoy it I’m sure.
How exciting, Shannon! I love dark wood floors with a white kitchen! My current sink is not report-worthy. In our last home we renovated the kitchen with white cabinets and quartz counter tops (I was NOT happy with), but I LOVED my sink! We had a huge single basin Kohler enameled cast iron sink…sigh. What can I say, I’m a sink girl : ) To this day, it’s really the one thing I truly miss about the old house.
I can’t wait to see your new stuff!
Jeanette
I am. I am! Thanks Jeanette! I expected ours to last longer… it’s a scratchy mess. The last house we had an amazing triple bowl sink and I was spoiled!! I’s love a real vintage farm style sink, but that would mean new counters and moving cabinets. Don’t see that happening. It’s just not a priority. Isn’t it funny how we pine over things from past homes? I have a few from each one!! I still miss my plantation shutters from the two homes back so I understand completely!
I know how excited you must be and for most women, it seems the kitchen is always the room we get most excited about (probably because we spend so much time in it!!). I love dark wood floors and since we are hardwood throughout our home (original in this house…added to our lakehouse), I wish we had gone with a darker stain. It just has a classic look and goes well with all types of appliances and cabinet choices. And guess what?! I have that sink you posted the picture of! It’s a Kohler and I love it! I don’t have the same faucet or handles, but the sink is exactly the same. I don’t remember if we found it at the Kohler website or at a discount website…hubby is a very savvy shopper! I’ll ask him if he remembers, it was only a little over a year ago. Anyway, I’m super excited for you and remember, the best part is in the planning!
Have a great trip to see your family!
XO,
Jane
OH good Jane! Thanks for the feedback. Our sink started to scratch up almost immediately. I was about $250-$300 if I remember correctly. I guess we’ll have to bite the bullet and spend more for a better finish this time! Or shop harder and smarter (: On the floors, we will be going darker then we have presently, and I’ll make sure to delete any red tones at all. I don’t think I’ll get a black/espresso dark though. Thanks again for the Kohler feedback!!
That IS exciting! I would be just as thrilled as you are…wood floors throughout the main living area is on my dream list too. I live vicariously through you for now and enjoy helping you make decisions. BTW, I love dark floors too.
I have wanted them for a few years. We did all laminate/wood look in the cottage house for my MIL, but when we got up to ours, we still thought we were going to rent this house out at that point and ended up with primarily carpet. It’s already been 8 years I think? Gosh, time flies!!!!
We finished building a house in October and picked dark wood floors (Mullican hand scraped) and I also have a white kitchen (except for my red island). I hope to post pictures soon on my blog so maybe you can get an idea of how it turned out at my house. I love my choices though. The floors are not hard to keep clean like some people acted they would. We have a central vac and I do it at least twice a week plus steam mop twice a week. (My older kids – ages 11 and 12 – help a lot too!)
Oh, would love to see. The hand scraped are calling to both me and the hubby. We’ll see what the budget allows. I am very, very excited. I have a pretty dark floor in the kitchen now, so I think I am prepared. I already clean it lots, so no big change there (:
Oops! Forget to tell you the paint came today! Thank you ~ I can’t wait to try out the black.
Oh Good! Thanks for letting me know (:
That’s great, Shannon! I love the wood floors we put in last year throughout our condo. The kitchen had already had a wood floor so it was nice to pull up the wall-to-wall carpet everywhere else and put more wood in. We went to Lumber Liquidators and found a couple of nice floors we liked. One we used in a few rooms was a bamboo. We are hoping to do some work in our kitchen this year ~ new countertop and I’d like to get a backsplash, {it’s just regular painted wall right now}. I’d also like to get a farmhouse sink. I understand Ikea has a nice one for a good price, so we will probably check that one out.
Oh, my hubby loves the Bamboo. One of the bloggy girls did a counter top that looks like marble but it’s laminate! I forget who… ? Anyhow, that is a fun option. I heard Ikea does have a great sink and lots of other kitchen stuff too. Ours is 4 hours away, so I don’t get there often at all.
Hi,
I have the farmhouse sink from IKEA. It is gorgeous and affordable. Literally under $200. I didn’t like their faucet options though so I went with an oil bronze from Delta. Can’t wait to see pics.
I’ve heard good thing about the IKEA sinks! Bet it’s gorgeous.
I’m so excited for you! I know you’re thrilled about your new kitchen! Can’t wait to see it.
Be a sweetie,
Shelia 😉
How exciting to get new flooring. You will love them. I was over the moon when we had ours installed a few years ago.
The guest post is Friday, my dear. Enjoy your family time.
Gotcha. Due the 11th. I have been a day early or late all week getting ready to leave. I don’t know which end is up now! I need to look into glue down or click and lock too. I think the weather affects that?
ooo, how exciting! New wood floors! I like dark ones too and white kitchens. Love that dream sink! I have a deep stainless but there’s something old feeling and charming about a porcelain one. Have fun!
This news in this post just floors me!
I have solid surface, a Corian sink, plain white. Looks as good as new and it is 20 yrs. old. Easy care.
Bliss
I have never tried the Corian sinks. Or composite. I like those style of counters though. Seamless and easy to clean. I got tile because of budget only but it’s better then what was there!
Oh how exciting!!! I know you are going to create something absolutely gorgeous. I can’t wait to see it!
Okay Miss, “I have a fabulous brand new dream home” (: Deserved of course, I know you did not want it that way!
