Noon Smart Home Lighting System
We’ve brought our little old house into the future with our amazing new Noon Smart Home Lighting System! After a few months of living with and actively using the features, I’m ready to tell you guys all about how our home lighting got smart.
Several months ago I got the opportunity to partner with Noon Home on a sponsored collaboration. Our house was built in 1929, and it’s anything but smart, so I was really intrigued by the idea of having something so fabulously techy and useful installed in our home. That’s when we got the idea of getting smart lights. If you’re interested in getting smart lights for your own home, you may want to have a look at a review from ReviewingThis on some smart light products, including the WiZ Smart Lights. And while Jim, and most homeowners, can install the system themselves, I got super spoiled and the company flew someone in from the headquarters in San Francisco to put it it for us.
Funny story; The poor guy almost didn’t make it, because they booked his flight into Bend Oregon instead of North Bend Oregon. Thankfully he caught the error in time! It’s a common mistake and we have lots of stories about the mix-ups that have happened over the years because of the similarity.
On the installation day, Carlos (the man is insanely brilliant!) arrived and we got started! It felt extra special to have someone so smart and knowledgeable about the product installing our system! I was even able to share the installation live on Instagram and show the process. And if you follow me on Instagram, that’s great, but some of you don’t and many of you like to read details, and get more information, so I decided I should share it here on the blog as well!
The system was installed about 4 months ago, back in April. And here is the really cool thing.
They are switches.
Kind of like light switches. Just really, really smart ones!
And what makes them smart, is that you can control them at the switch and also by using the Noon app on your smartphone.
Plus, they work with the light-bulbs that are already in your light fixtures. Chandeliers, vanity lights, can lights, porch lights… if a switch turns it on and there is a light bulb in it, the Noon Home Lighting System will tell it what to do. So you don’t have to tear you home apart, put holes in the walls, or put special lights in every fixture.
It all starts with the ROOM DIRECTOR.
This is the switch that tells the EXTENSION SWITCHES in a room, what to do.
Room Director, black touch screen | Extension Switch, white with toggles
NOON automatically identifies your existing bulb types and configures itself for smooth dimming, without a buzz or a flicker.
It was such a pleasant surprise to find out that all my light fixtures being controlled by Noon, are now dimmable. In the app, and at the switch, by toggling the little buttons on the side.
That is where SCENES come in.
You can create SCENES in the app, telling your fixtures exactly what you want them to do for any given activity or mood you’d like to set.
I can name a scene, and assign which lights I want controlled, and how bright or dim I want each fixture to be. All by sliding the the little dot under each light, to the left or right. The Scenes can be accessed at the touch-screen Room Director, or via the app.
For the scene I’m calling Summer Nights, I selected my kitchen sink light and the two outdoor lights, and set them to ambient/mood levels. Enough to enjoy the evening, our fire pit… a sunset, safely.
Meaning I won’t break my neck coming up and down the dark exterior staircase. Always a plus!
Each Scene is custom, and can be any lighting combination you choose. The Noon system can be installed in one room, or your entire home. It’s also compatible with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant & IFTTT
I’m not used to this sort of thing… but I’m admitting it right here, as if I weren’t feeling spoiled already, Carlos went and installed a Room Director and Extension Switches at The Little Cottage too! His flight didn’t leave until the next day, and since there were extras… he put them in the guest cottage too! And I’ll tell you why I’m so ecstatic about that.
Because the system has a VACATION Mode!!
Vacation Mode mimics your normal lighting behavior to “play back” your lights as if you were home.
How it works
-
Vacation Mode learns your normal lighting behavior, including scenes and the lights you turn on and off, on which days, and at what times.
-
When you turn on Vacation Mode, your lights will turn on and off and scenes will be activated based on your typical patterns.
-
As you live with the Noon Lighting System, Vacation Mode will adjust to mirror your most recent usage.
-
If someone uses a Room Director or Extension Switch in the room with Vacation Mode enabled, Vacation Mode will automatically turn off.
You guys, I know it’s like I’m fawning… but Noon does so many cool things! For me, knowing it didn’t look like The Little Cottage was abandoned was priceless. That alone gave me such a huge piece of mind. Plus, you’ve still got full control away from home right in the app, with your phone.
I may or may not have turned lights on & off at our house a few times to mess with Austin while we were away in Savannah. It’s okay, he thought it was funny… mostly.
Even with him watching the house, it was really nice to not have to worry about him remembering to turn the outside lights on & off like I do every morning and night. Feeding the cats, watering, bringing in the mail and getting the trash out was enough to ask. This way, no one would even know I wasn’t home flipping the switches.
Oh yeah, I don’t have to do that anymore, because there is also a SCHEDULER.
Really handy when you are just about to fall asleep and can’t remember if you turned the porch light on. Now, I’ve got my outside lights all set up on it, and you don’t even have to change the actual “times”, because it has sunrise and sunset selections, as well as exact times. Kind of a set-it-and-forget-it. Daylight savings can’t even mess with you!
With all the updates and changes we are making in the kitchen right now it’s load off my mind to know I don’t have to think about compatibility with what ever new light fixture I end up with, because Noon will work with LED’s, candelabra or incandescent bulbs. It’s all about the smart switch, not the bulbs or fixtures, so the system will change with me over the years whatever my light fixture mood might be.
Noon also boasts a night light function, and there are so many things you can do to customize the system to make it perfect for you. And I think I mentioned it before, but it’s also compatible with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant & IFTTT
You all know I don’t get every new fancy thing that comes out. Okay, I pretty much don’t get any new fancy thing that comes out, lol! But this has been fantastic. I can see why people fall in love with really smart, well thought out technology. In addition to feeling a pinch spoiled, Noon has definitely given me a sense of ease and so much piece of mind when we are away from home and that is such a blessing! Thanks for joining me today, if you have any questions I’ll do my very best to answer them. xo Shannon
What an amazing lighting system.
We have been thoroughly pleased!
Very cool lighting features! I’m sure Austin wasn’t thrilled when the lights were turning on and off! That’s hilarious!
He’s a good sport 😉 It was all in fun. I’d do it while I was talking to him on the phone. LOL
