Our Merry Christmas Cottage Bedroom

Hello, hello… and ho, ho, ho!! Welcome to the cottage. While I went soft, subtle and pink in our living and dining room this season [you can see that here], I went Christmas red, and decorated with a more traditional feel in our holiday bedecked bedroom.  Welcome to day 5 of the Christmas Home tour series put together by Marty of A Stroll Thru Life. If you’ve never visited before, HELLO! I’m Shannon, and my husband & I live on the Oregon Coast, in a small town… in a small little cottage home. It’s going on 100 years old, and while she isn’t perfect, she’s perfect for us.

We don’t have a fancy master suite, heck, we don’t even have an en-suite, but it’s served us well for over 15 years now. I’ve actually had both over the years and it’s never been something high on my list. I can make most anything work. Now, a mud room would make my life much easier, and I don’t know why every house doesn’t have one. Snow-to-sand… you need a proper landing place in a home!

Of course, landing in bed at the end of the day is my favorite! And I love having a cozy bed to fall into. Especially at Christmas. There is nothing as luxurious feeling as a special bedroom. I don’t mean expensive or fancy, but special in a way that feels meaningful to you. Be it the linens, extra pillows (yes please!), some twinkle lights, candles, a stack of books (also, yes please!) or if you’ve still got kids in the house… a secret snack stash. haha. 

My husband and I have kind of gotten away from gift giving over the years, and have opted to adopt a family, some elderly folks and/or kids during the holiday season instead. I’ve never been one to just make up something I want because it’s day XYZ… and Jim doesn’t like to do that either, but last year, in lieu of any kind of gift, I bought myself some Pottery Barn Christmas bedding. Best present ever! I used it all through the holiday and into January.

It’s the Santa Toile pattern and you can find it here. I watched the site like crazy, and jumped when it went on sale, plus there was free shipping. Oh, and if you were wondering, it washes up beautifully. I grab it right when the dryer is done and don’t even have to iron it. 

Our room is not a traditional shape, it’s long, but it’s not very deep. Our door clears the foot of our bed by about a foot & a half! But, we have the perfect spot for a tree in front of the French doors, so… I did the “Christmas Tree” in the bedroom thing this year!

I highly recommend it if you can swing it! I used my Balsam Hill flip tree and it made it so simple. It’s naked, and it’s perfect. That glow in the evening feels so special. And instead of a tree skirt, I used one of the Christmas Tree boxes [tutorial here] we made last year. I may adorn it, but I plan to leave it up through January and the thought of just the bare tree with the soft white lights seems right.

Even if you don’t have the room, or perhaps the energy for a full size tree, you can add twinkle lights above the bed, or maybe a tiny table top tree on a nightstand, for that special feeling that Christmas lights evoke. 

Years ago I found this vintage Frosty The Snowman blow mold. We had a Frosty & Santa growing up, and my sister and I switched off each night. We had to trade, because we BOTH wanted the Frosty and that was my moms way to keep the peace. It’s funny, I have a Santa too… but he’s stuffed in a tote.

Poor Santa, still not first pick. I’ve had the little table top trees for years, and I used a Better Homes & Gardens lantern on each night stand. I’ve had those for years as well. In fact, I think I only added a few little trees (I’ll show you soon), and something I picked up at my mom’s that I could not resist!!!! 

To dress the bed — I opted for a set each (standard & king) of the Pottery Barn Santa Toile pillowcases (those two sets,  were the same price as one set of shams) and the Santa Toile duvet. The rest of the bedding is in shades of white and cream, with varying weaves and patterns. I use a lot of neutrals all over the house because they are so versatile. I love that neutral colors are calm when I want them to be, but I can easily add in color for a change at any time of the year! 

I also layered my dust ruffles. I’d love to get rid of those altogether, but when I was shopping for a platform bed, nothing I could find fit between the allotted space between my windows. So, a headboard it was! I went from a metal farmhouse style, to this padded and tufted headboard. What a change! I love how soft this one is, and you can comfortably sit up against it in bed to read. I wasted all those good reading years on my previous one.

The art was hand lettered by me. I’ve got a blank with a darker stained frame waiting on me, and I’m hoping to hand paint some trees on it to take the current signs place. Unfortunaly, I didn’t get it done in time for picture day. I’ve got a list of projects I want to do, we’ll see what I manage to get done. I’ll make sure to share whatever I do accomplish with you though, deal?

This is one of those things that I didn’t know I needed. Having it on wheels is ahh-mazing, because it’s never in the way! I ordered it for the loft guest bedroom at The Little Cottage… but it never made it over there. Bad hostess! 

When the weather changes, this is my favorite thing in the bedroom, besides my bed (and Jimmy). If you have room for an electric fireplace, get one. They feel so decadent. This one has a remote, and you can get all warm and toasty… and then click, it’s off, and YOU get to stay in bed. 

Try as I might to have a bit more refined look in my home… and be more “grown up”, I am an absolute sucker for cute little animal stuff. Meet Mr. P. He came home with me from California. I just fell right in love with him when I saw him. This is my something new for the bedroom. I found him at HomeGoods (in case you need one too). 

Because we got a little remote control for the tree lights (I tuck it under my pillow), I gave up my bedside lamp in order to squeeze a little more Christmas cra… CHEER on it. 

I know vintage mugs might not make much sense in a bedroom, but I wasn’t able to decorate the kitchen this year, so here they are! I just had to have them out. 

This Santa made the cut. And the pedestals? They are chunky wood candle pillars, I just flipped them over. 

The vintage mugs are definitely on my side though, because Jim thinks this particular Frosty is creepy looking. I obviously do not agree! Plus, what does he know about decorating? hehe.

These are my new teeny tiny flocking embossed mercury glass trees that hardly take up any space at all. Cause you know, I hardly have a single tree. Oh, is my nose growing? 

Okay, three… I got three. 

But how easy are they??? I mainly did all my decorating with trees this year. It was so simple. No stress, fast, they look cute clustered together, or alone… and the decorating just fell into place. I’m all about easy. These last 3 years have taught me to let go of so much, to enjoy what I can do… and to make things easier on myself. It’s hard, and I’m still learning, but I’ve definitely gotten better!
