Small Space Outdoor Decorating Ideas
You can create a comfortable, fashionable and affordable outdoor entertaining area, no matter the size! I’m focusing on a small space patio today to share how you can live large, and be super comfortable, with the right outdoor furniture choices. I’m also highlighting some outdoor decorating ideas to make your deck, porch or patio the ultimate mini retreat!
Hello friends, I’m doing my first ever remote post. A few weeks ago I got to go visit my mama and while I was there, I got to give her a Better Homes & Gardens outdoor entertaining makeover. My mom lives in a little Southern California beach community, and I knew she’d get so much joy and use out a freshly furnished outdoor space.
We scoured the Walmart site together looking at all the Better Homes & Gardens outdoor furniture for the perfect sized set, and we found it! The Camrose Farmhouse 3-pc Chat Set was exactly what she was looking for. I loved her pick. The wing back has a very “Caribbean vacation” vibe and the seat cushions and extra large back pillows are perfect for lengthy lounging and long conversations.
When we found it, I clicked buy and entered her shipping address, and quick as a flash, it was all delivered right to her door.
Since the furniture arrived before I did, we only needed to gather up some fun accessories & necessities to complete the space.
When I arrived, we hit her local Walmart to stock up on Better Homes & Gardens pots, flowers and everything that makes an outdoor space feel complete.
We threw down a sisal rug my mom already had on-hand, and started creating an outdoor relaxation station, in the patio space that sits right off her kitchen.
You DO NOT have to skimp on style just because you don’t have a lavish outdoor area or a huge resort style back yard! The chairs in this set pretty much ooze relaxed elegance… with the woven finish, and features like the the skirted chair base and the furniture style feet.
About the table – it’s the perfect size. You can do a full pitcher and 2 glasses, with room enough for some fragrant potted lavender and fresh lemon slices.
The table would also easily accommodate books, the newspaper, coffee or tea in the morning, or a few glasses of wine in the evening.
TIP: Galvanized trays are great for carrying your goodies to and from the kitchen all in one trip. More time for relaxing.
Better Homes & Gardens has a really cute line of melamine dishware and pretty acrylic tumblers, just right for no-stress outdoor use.
They glasses come in short or tall and look like blown glass with the bubbles trapped inside. The rim features a soft aqua finish.
You’ll also find tons of colorful outdoor patio cushions & pillows.
Now… we cheated a little bit in the pillow department, adding the HELLO along with our outdoor selection because we both just really liked it!
That happy little daisy peeking out was actually a gift to my mom from her sister the week before. (Hello Aunt Donna) My family, I’m telling you, we all love the BHG line. It made a happy little addition to my mom’s potted Olive tree.
Plus, it’s solar! And looks so cute lit up at night.
When my mom saw my post from last month [you can see it here]…
She really liked my concrete pots, so we got her some too! Aren’t they so pretty with the Stock planted in them?
You can see I added a candle sleeve and candle as well. I think this was Plumeria? I can’t recall now… but the color was so pretty and I recall it it smelled especially divine when I inhaled it in the store. haha
We did Freesia in the other concrete pot, and added a galvanized lantern. There is nothing like the glow from a few candles to instantly relax and sooth.
I could have just left my nose stuffed in these petals the whole time we were popping her patio together. I can almost smell them now…
And isn’t the wood grain on the table great? It’s metal! So, very durable and weather resistant.
Speaking of weather, the sun can be brutal, making a good patio umbrella a key outdoor element. Offering shade, it’s cooling properties and vital protection from the suns harmful rays, a patio umbrella really is a must-have.
And this one is also… Solar! It’s got a little cap you twist right on top, and then a on-and-off switch located right in the pole.
The solar aspect is extra perfect because while it’s of course, energy saving, you can also have a lit umbrella, even if you don’t have a handy electrical outlet.
My mom actually discovered the umbrella section while I was looking at pillows (shocking I know) and discovered it was solar! She picked the “aquifer” and it blends right into the sunny California sky. Good choice mom. You’re hired.
Lastly, we added a big galvanized bucket and filled it with Stock as well. Stock has a lightly sweet, and slightly spicy scent, and they are wonderfully fragrant.
I love to plant them in spots where you’ll linger, like seating areas, as well as where you enter and exit the house.
They are deliciously intoxicating!
Depending on the the location and what you plant in them, you may consider drilling holes in the bottom if your decide to use your tubs as planters. The handles are an added bonus making it easy to move your plants and flowers as necessary, and for cleaning and sweeping up.
And that’s how easy it was to create a pretty, functional, comfortable outdoor room. Perfect for entertaining & relaxing. Morning, noon or night! What an incredible treat to get to gift my mom this set, and to work on this project with her. Thanks for joining me and following along!! xo Shannon
This is where I’m going to rave – I can not recommend this set enough. I wish I had someplace I could have something like this. It was seriously as comfortable as real furniture. Super nicely made, and very sturdy! The furniture had the little feet you could spin and adjust in case your outdoor area isn’t perfectly level. And ordering online for the big stuff, I know I’ve said it before… but so handy. No wrestling it into your car and then home. It comes right to your door! The value is incredible too. While my mom and I were out shopping, we kept coming across sets that were so much more expensive and not nearly as nice. I personally feel the Better Homes & Gardens brand bringing this kind of quality to Walmart at affordable prices is a very good thing and I continue to be proud to share my experiences with you, representing this brand. Okay I’m done. Thank you.

She is, thanks Debbie. And they are, when we had them inside putting the bases on (it was raining) I sat in them on night to watch TV 😉
Passed the test for sure. lol

I love it, and inquiring minds need to know what mom said when she backed up and took a look after if was all done?
Shannon at Fox Hollow Cottage says
She loved it Bliss. She picked the chair set, so I knew she would love it. There were some close contenders, lots of cute options.
I’d love to duplicate it at my house 😉

Hello Shannon,
I love the chairs that you purchased. You and your Mom did a great job at setting this all together…..the plants and planters are very nice……Is it warm weather out there???? We can’t do any outside work yet, still may have light snow here in PA…….Thank you for sharing…..

Yes, it’s been nice. Though it rained while I was there and that was causing a bit of stress on my part. Yikes. I knew I had to get all my pictures while I was there, and luckily we got them between the rain. Only I could go to California and bring the rain with me. lol. It’s rainy here at home now, and I hope that snow melts and you get some Spring soon!!

Happy Friday. Have a great weekend.

It was my pleasure! And they are ridiculously comfortable. (in the best way) 😉

What a fun and delightful project for your mother! I love it and know how she will enjoy it daily as she thinks of you. My own son helped me last year by putting a metal roof over my outdoor room and I have so enjoyed it and will for many seasons to come. Your choices were beautiful.
Shannon at Fox Hollow Cottage says
That is wonderful Marie. We really need a covered outdoor space here before I can get outdoor furniture with cushions, otherwise they’d be wet much of the time. LOL – Enjoy your new space this season 🙂
Susan Castillo says
It looks great-so inviting. Makes me want to just sit and visit with your mom! Where is the blue and white throw blanket from? It’s just what I need to go with my BHG pillows. Thanks
Shannon at Fox Hollow Cottage says
Hi Susan – We grabbed that from my moms stash 😉 I think it’s from HomeGoods.
