The Little Cottage Living Room Design Plan
Today I’m sharing some mood board ideas showing multiple sofa colors and styles to fit a living room refresh. The room has a small foot print with a vaulted ceiling, and currently has a transitional, casual cottage farmhouse aesthetic.

Hello Foxes! I’m in the midst of choosing some new furnishings for The Little Cottage living room and I wanted to share my choices and general design plan, as well as ask for your help in choosing the biggest piece in the room.
Some of you might recall that I was able to partner with Grandin Road back at the beginning of the year, and I am so incredibly fortunate that they reached out to me again, for a new collaboration! I know! Is this even my life???
The Current Living Room Look – minus the seasonal elements.
Trust me, I don’t even the littlest tiny bit take for granted what this job allowed me to experience. And I am SO lucky to get to share it all with you! As part of my upcoming Autumn collaborations, I am able to select a new sofa for The Little Cottage. A grown up, full size, real furniture sofa.
And here is where my wee problem arises. I selected the perfect piece for my very neutral living room. A nubby linen fabric sofa in a soft washed denim. The style and color were an ideal balance for how I decorate, how we live, what the room will be used for, and our our-all casual vibe. But it was discontinued. This is where you come in. I need help!
The Little Cottage Living Room Design Plan
These are some mock-ups of each sofa choice, shown with a few of the new Autumn offerings from Grand Road, and the Atticus deconstructed chairs I’ll be adding to the space. They are going to take the place of the IKEA wicker chairs, which were great place holders, but a real chair will be much more comfortable for guests.
This is the London Sofa in Grey Mist
The Grey Mist is is by far the safest choice. It’s a beautiful soft grey. Nice & neutral and would be the most versatile. Which is often my go-to choice in most things! Especially a large piece that will command so much visual attention in the room.
This is the London Sofa in Blush
The Blush is a gorgeous, grown-up, subtle shade of pink. And coincidentally it’s my mom’s favorite and her pick. But you might recall, I tried pink velvet [click here], and while it was so pretty… I don’t really know if I’m a permanent pink kinda girl.
The London Sofa in Jade Green
The London sofa in Jade. Does anyone remember the fabulous vintage green velvet sofa I found at a city-wide garage sale? At the time, I didn’t feel like I was a strong enough decorator to pull off something so bold, and I sold it. I’ve semi-regretted it ever since. The neutral lover in me balks at going bold… but she sure is pretty!
The Ciprien Sofa in Leather
The Ciprien is a mid-tone colored leather sofa. It has a single bottom cushion, a feature I love, and a clean style that leans towards mid century modern. This one is my sister’s favorite. And I do love that is would be fairly stress free choice, considering none of the above sofas are slip-covered.
And there you have it! You might be wondering why I just don’t go with another Ava [see it here]. Believe me, I thought about it. But she’s a plus size gal, and is too large for the small footprint I’ve got to work with at The Little Cottage. With it’s soaring ceilings, it “feels” much larger than it is!
Almost every single thing I put in my home & share with you has been painstakingly selected. It doesn’t matter if I pay full price, get it on sale, if it’s gifted, was vintage & cheap or free. I overthink almost everything.
Except Wicker Egg Chairs that go on clearance. hehe
I want to make a smart choice, and I thought you could help me. Plus, I know you will have some great insights.
Can’t wait to hear what you think Foxes!! xo Shan
Leather sofa. Great lines and profile. So many directions that you can go while building on it. That’s opinion, however I know that whatever you chose will look fantastic-you have the gift of decorating.
It’s an excellent opinion!
THANK YOU!
I like Grey Mist the best. Blush is trendy. Jade is just to much and I would want it out of the house before to long! I see that as an accent color. Leather is cold and pillows and draped blankets tend to slide off. Not to mention it can be cold to the touch. Maybe a chair in a bold color would be satisfying.
Just my “two cents” ! Good luck !
Your two cents are worth a million.
Thank you!
Great points.
I love the grey mist or the leather. Both are so timeless and can go with anything. Can’t wait to see what you choose.
Thank you Marty.
Beautiful choices.
I am leaning toward the clean lines of 4, the leather sofa. I have a leather sofa that shade and I have never tired of it. 2nd choice would be the green if you think you could live with it for a long time. I am a lover of all things green, all shades green but to me this just seems like a green I might tire of after a while. They are all very pretty and I don’t think you can go wrong no matter what choice you make. Good luck!
The leather really came out of no where for me, but it’s got some great pros.
Hands down, my choice would be the jade sofa! Absolutely stunning. I would also add bits of “jade” around the room, as well as some more plants. Having over 60 plants in our home, I can’t resist such a beautiful earthy sofa!
Have fun with your decision,
Angie ?
Oh my, you are a true plant mama!
Bet they are gorgeous!!!!
Crushing on this leather sofa. The others seem too formal and (saying this with love in my heart), maybe a .little boring. Lol
ha! I love your honesty, it’s exactly what I asked for!!!!
I’m color phobic when it comes to large pieces of furniture too! So I would pick either 1 or 4 because they’re neutral and allow for plenty of decorating around seasons!! While I love 4, are you ready to go mid century in that space? Hope this helps, can’t wait to see what you pick!
You are inside my head right now. Exactly my thoughts.
You’re right, gray is very safe…beautiful but safe. I actually think that the green while being a bold choice could be a seasonless neutral & would work with most of the seasons (except 4th of July). I really love the brown leather. It would make for a modern manly design (might be good for Austin to chill) but I don’t feel that it goes with your coastal/casual/antique vibe and other furnishings. I’m not a fan of the blush at all. Way too girly and reminds me of melted strawberry ice cream.
That said I’m thinking Green gets my vote. I would love to see that green decked out for Fall and Christmas. I’m dreaming of all of the lush pines you could put with it!
If you’re afraid of the green, you should go with gray.
I wonder about the versatility of the leather as well.
And I just have such a hard time committing to color, even though the green is just luscious!
Oh my brain hurts. hahaha
Go for the blush!! It’s neutral but not blah. It would be unexpected and, therefore, a conversation piece.
My mama loves that one 😉
Love your stuff but neither sofa looks comfortable! And after owning a leather sofa and loveseat, I will never buy one again. Cold in winter, sticky in summer, and makes noise when you move. A big comfy sofa would be my choice and I do like the denim idea. You always do a good.job!
I know… 🙁 I really loved the blue so very much.
This is such a hard choice.
Thanks for your insights about the leather!
First off, congrats on Grandin Road! That is awesome and I can’t wait to see future posts!
I chose number one. I fell for it before I saw the other choices. I don’t think of it as safe or boring, I see it more as a work-with-everything piece. While I liked the blush, I don’t always see it as the easiest piece to decorate with. You can’t go wrong with the leather option. It’s certainly a sturdy piece with clean lines that will stand the test of time. But it doesn’t seem as comfy/cozy to me as the fabric sofas. The green sofa is beautiful, no doubt. But will it remain an easy piece as you move into spring and summer and crave softer neutrals again next year?
So although any of these pieces would be beautiful and stand alone as a statement piece, I am thinking gray would allow for so many more every-season options – like pillows. And you know I’m all about the pillows ?
But I know you and I’m sure whichever one you pick will have me oohing and ahhing time and time again!
Thank you sweetheart! It’s pretty exciting for The Little Cottage 😉
Thank you for your insights and thoughts on the sofa I’ve got to pick… soon.
My initial choice was the simplicity of the Grey Mist, and I might end up back there.
I’ll probably be as surprised as you all with my final selection. LOL!
I rather like the leather sofa, surprisingly. They are all beautiful and I know your choice will be just the right one.
ME too 😉
So many choices. lol
THANKS!
I love the Blush! It is soft and muted yet just a nice pop of color.
I know it’s SUCH a pretty shade! I just need to commit… to one.
The Green!!!! I am in love! #2 would be the leather. While everything here does work with each sofa, i think the others just blend a bit too much and are kind of boring. In my opinion, with all of the neutral that is going on, you really need a WOW piece. And think how pretty they will look with your neutral pillows and throws!
VERY good points Tina. All four are in the running and have good attributes.
Man it’s hard to pick again.
The Grey Mist is gorgeous but #2 is Blush. I think either would tie everything together. Blush would be a muted/bold choice for me lol. Congrats on the partnership & good luck. I’m so looking forward to the reveal.
Thank you Sherry, the blush is such a pretty shade.
I am so torn! I made that first decision, and now I’m all out of them. lol
