The Little Cottage Living Room Design Plan
Today I’m sharing some mood board ideas showing multiple sofa colors and styles to fit a living room refresh. The room has a small foot print with a vaulted ceiling, and currently has a transitional, casual cottage farmhouse aesthetic.
New here? Or just want to catch up on everything we’ve done to The Little Cottage thus far, then[Click here] get the overall feel of our guest cottage, and also to find out how we ended up even having a guest cottage!
Hello Foxes! I’m in the midst of choosing some new furnishings for The Little Cottage living room and I wanted to share my choices and general design plan, as well as ask for your help in choosing the biggest piece in the room.
Some of you might recall that I was able to partner with Grandin Road back at the beginning of the year, and I am so incredibly fortunate that they reached out to me again, for a new collaboration! I know! Is this even my life???
The Current Living Room Look – minus the seasonal elements.
Trust me, I don’t even the littlest tiny bit take for granted what this job allowed me to experience. And I am SO lucky to get to share it all with you! As part of my upcoming Autumn collaborations, I am able to select a new sofa for The Little Cottage. A grown up, full size, real furniture sofa.
And here is where my wee problem arises. I selected the perfect piece for my very neutral living room. A nubby linen fabric sofa in a soft washed denim. The style and color were an ideal balance for how I decorate, how we live, what the room will be used for, and our our-all casual vibe. But it was discontinued. This is where you come in. I need help!
The Little Cottage Living Room Design Plan
These are some mock-ups of each sofa choice, shown with a few of the new Autumn offerings from Grand Road, and the Atticus deconstructed chairs I’ll be adding to the space. They are going to take the place of the IKEA wicker chairs, which were great place holders, but a real chair will be much more comfortable for guests.
This is the London Sofa in Grey Mist
The Grey Mist is is by far the safest choice. It’s a beautiful soft grey. Nice & neutral and would be the most versatile. Which is often my go-to choice in most things! Especially a large piece that will command so much visual attention in the room.
This is the London Sofa in Blush
The Blush is a gorgeous, grown-up, subtle shade of pink. And coincidentally it’s my mom’s favorite and her pick. But you might recall, I tried pink velvet [click here], and while it was so pretty… I don’t really know if I’m a permanent pink kinda girl.
The London Sofa in Jade Green
The London sofa in Jade. Does anyone remember the fabulous vintage green velvet sofa I found at a city-wide garage sale? At the time, I didn’t feel like I was a strong enough decorator to pull off something so bold, and I sold it. I’ve semi-regretted it ever since. The neutral lover in me balks at going bold… but she sure is pretty!
The Ciprien Sofa in Leather
The Ciprien is a mid-tone colored leather sofa. It has a single bottom cushion, a feature I love, and a clean style that leans towards mid century modern. This one is my sister’s favorite. And I do love that is would be fairly stress free choice, considering none of the above sofas are slip-covered.
And there you have it! You might be wondering why I just don’t go with another Ava [see it here]. Believe me, I thought about it. But she’s a plus size gal, and is too large for the small footprint I’ve got to work with at The Little Cottage. With it’s soaring ceilings, it “feels” much larger than it is!
Almost every single thing I put in my home & share with you has been painstakingly selected. It doesn’t matter if I pay full price, get it on sale, if it’s gifted, was vintage & cheap or free. I overthink almost everything.
Except Wicker Egg Chairs that go on clearance. hehe
I want to make a smart choice, and I thought you could help me. Plus, I know you will have some great insights.
Can’t wait to hear what you think Foxes!! xo Shan

I would go with the leather. I never thought I would want a leather sofa, but was given when someone I know downsized. I loved it is neutrality and durability – grandchildren and pet proof. When we moved it wouldn’t fit through the door of our 1925 bungalow. I miss it. I don’t think the leather one as mid-century, but as timeless traditional.
Shannon Fox says
Well darn! That must have been hard to lose. Sometimes we find the perfect thing!
Hope you can find a good replacement 😉
Frances W. says
Leather but in a softer style.
Colored leather available?
So much heavy brown with the floors and
Modern might clash with French chandelier
I live green personally as I use greens as my neutral all over my home. The color offered
seems to have yellow undertones. Not prettiest green ever. See a sample though. Each color batch is different. Grey is grey. Lifeless in the white room. Your room has lits of light and livelyness. A beautiful green is easy to accessorize seasonally. It could be your anchor piece.
But a colored leather could too with less upkeep.
Enjoy the process.
Shannon Fox says
The leather does lean mid century modern. Just the one shade is available.
A color would definitely anchor the room and be a huge focal point.
Thank you!! ~ Shannon

I love the grey mist! Pop the pink in with easy to change throw pillows ?.
Shannon Fox says
Thanks Tammy.
My mom will love you now 😉 lol

The leather looks cheap, the jade not so (really not) pretty. I would go with the Grey couch. You could add all different color pillows and a throw. How about adding a chair with a pop of color? I’m by far not a decorator, so this is just my opinion. You will make the right choice because you know your the one that lives with it. I love reading your post and getting ideas.
Shannon Fox says
Thanks for chiming in Linda! All opinions are appreciated.
The Atticus chairs are a firm yes, so I’m just in the sofa selection stage now 😉

Hi Shannon! My vote is for sofa #1! It’s classy & sassy, yet the gray is neutral so you’ll have endless possibilities with pillows, rugs & decor. I’m sure whatever you choose, it will be stunning! 🙂
Shannon Fox says
You know I loooove me some versatile. haha
But dang, you’d think I was picking a new husband or something. Sheeh!
doris wilcox says
I know it is a new sofa, but I think you will be going away from the cottage
feel of your home. I think the slip covered sofa is the focal point of the room.
that being said, I love keeping up with your cottage decor!!!
Shannon Fox says
Doris, I absolutely LOVE my white sofa and it’s here to stay.
This will be a sofa for the guest cottage living room, where our son is presently living while home for school.
I’ll always have a cottage feel of some degree to our home 🙂
Suzanne Carrier says
I know you lean toward neutrals so I think you might regret a color. I vote for the leather. It looks more upscale and it always looks new. Think of how pretty you could make it look for fall and Christmas. We love ours!
Shannon Fox says
Thank you so much! You guys are helping a ton!

No. 1 Grey Mist, No.2 the leather. Either one goes lovely with the colours you have going on. Good luck, can’t wait to see what you choose.
Shannon Fox says
Thanks Darlene!
I’m finding myself leaning that way… we shall see.
They are so different!
Teddee Grace says
Oh, go neutral. You can always pick up either the blush or green, gray or even brown leather in pillows. Love the London Sofa, by the way. In my opinion the leather looks cold, stiff and uninviting and the lines are too straight for me.
Shannon Fox says
My mom doesn’t like the more mid century modern lines of the leather either! lol
But I do love the versatility.
Good points!!

Hi Shan — Sometimes going for the safe choice does not make your heart happy. The Blush Sofa is lovely and subtle and will look wonderful with your black & white accessories. Go for it!
Shannon Fox says
Did my mom call you? hahaha
Bernadette Anderson says
The London Grey Mist sofa is great for your main house space, but since it’s your guest cottage, the leather seems more suited. However, the particular shade of brown leather doesn’t seem to be your aesthetic. It’s a bit dark. Maybe a grey leather, or how about two loveseats. Lots to think about. Talk it out loud with your hubby! They make for a good sounding board.
Shannon Fox says
I have a wonderful husband but he never offers decorating advice. He listens well though 😉
Thanks for the great perspective!
Sharon says
I would choose the Grey Mist. I think you would regret the green sofa, and the leather looks too mid-century modern for the space. Just my opinion.
Shannon Fox says
Thank you Sharon! It’s so appreciated.
Shannon 🙂
Tracey says
I think grey mist is the one I would choose. To me furniture is a big purchase so I usually choose something that isn’t so trendy like a certain color or style. The grey mist has staying power.
Shannon Fox says
That is me too Tracey!
And why I loved the washed denim shade. I knew it would be timeless.
Thanks oodles for you input.
Dottie says
Leather first choice…..Timeless and men will love it too.
NO TO THE GREEN!
Second choice blush.
Enjoy your blog.
Shannon Fox says
I love your firm choice!
And the staunch no to the green. hehe
Thanks!
