The Little Cottage Living Room Design Plan
Today I’m sharing some mood board ideas showing multiple sofa colors and styles to fit a living room refresh. The room has a small foot print with a vaulted ceiling, and currently has a transitional, casual cottage farmhouse aesthetic.
New here? Or just want to catch up on everything we’ve done to The Little Cottage thus far, then[Click here] get the overall feel of our guest cottage, and also to find out how we ended up even having a guest cottage!
Hello Foxes! I’m in the midst of choosing some new furnishings for The Little Cottage living room and I wanted to share my choices and general design plan, as well as ask for your help in choosing the biggest piece in the room.
Some of you might recall that I was able to partner with Grandin Road back at the beginning of the year, and I am so incredibly fortunate that they reached out to me again, for a new collaboration! I know! Is this even my life???
The Current Living Room Look – minus the seasonal elements.
Trust me, I don’t even the littlest tiny bit take for granted what this job allowed me to experience. And I am SO lucky to get to share it all with you! As part of my upcoming Autumn collaborations, I am able to select a new sofa for The Little Cottage. A grown up, full size, real furniture sofa.
And here is where my wee problem arises. I selected the perfect piece for my very neutral living room. A nubby linen fabric sofa in a soft washed denim. The style and color were an ideal balance for how I decorate, how we live, what the room will be used for, and our our-all casual vibe. But it was discontinued. This is where you come in. I need help!
The Little Cottage Living Room Design Plan
These are some mock-ups of each sofa choice, shown with a few of the new Autumn offerings from Grand Road, and the Atticus deconstructed chairs I’ll be adding to the space. They are going to take the place of the IKEA wicker chairs, which were great place holders, but a real chair will be much more comfortable for guests.
This is the London Sofa in Grey Mist
The Grey Mist is is by far the safest choice. It’s a beautiful soft grey. Nice & neutral and would be the most versatile. Which is often my go-to choice in most things! Especially a large piece that will command so much visual attention in the room.
This is the London Sofa in Blush
The Blush is a gorgeous, grown-up, subtle shade of pink. And coincidentally it’s my mom’s favorite and her pick. But you might recall, I tried pink velvet [click here], and while it was so pretty… I don’t really know if I’m a permanent pink kinda girl.
The London Sofa in Jade Green
The London sofa in Jade. Does anyone remember the fabulous vintage green velvet sofa I found at a city-wide garage sale? At the time, I didn’t feel like I was a strong enough decorator to pull off something so bold, and I sold it. I’ve semi-regretted it ever since. The neutral lover in me balks at going bold… but she sure is pretty!
The Ciprien Sofa in Leather
The Ciprien is a mid-tone colored leather sofa. It has a single bottom cushion, a feature I love, and a clean style that leans towards mid century modern. This one is my sister’s favorite. And I do love that is would be fairly stress free choice, considering none of the above sofas are slip-covered.
And there you have it! You might be wondering why I just don’t go with another Ava [see it here]. Believe me, I thought about it. But she’s a plus size gal, and is too large for the small footprint I’ve got to work with at The Little Cottage. With it’s soaring ceilings, it “feels” much larger than it is!
Almost every single thing I put in my home & share with you has been painstakingly selected. It doesn’t matter if I pay full price, get it on sale, if it’s gifted, was vintage & cheap or free. I overthink almost everything.
Except Wicker Egg Chairs that go on clearance. hehe
I want to make a smart choice, and I thought you could help me. Plus, I know you will have some great insights.
Can’t wait to hear what you think Foxes!! xo Shan

I just hate for furniture shopping! It makes me anxious for fear of choosing the wrong thing. These are both beautiful and I’m torn. I think my choice would be the leather. Really like the warmth of the color and there would be sooo much to go with it. We should all have this lovely dilemma! Good luck with either. Whatever you do it will be perfect!
Shannon Fox says
I know Amy, it’s a good problem to have! But boy to I stress about making the wrong choice 😉
Thanks for you feedback!!
Sally says
I would go with the gray. It won’t go out of style and will go well with almost anything.
Shannon Fox says
Sound advice Sally, thank you!!

The #4 leather the others seem to formal & not cozy at all. Sorry that’s my choice. A sofa is a big part of a room & takes thinking it out. What a great opportunity!
Shannon Fox says
Thanks for your vote Jene’!

I am in the blue camp this is a great understated color that can be changed season to season with crisp white, or warm gray’s and so many other colors. Because the Little Cottage is just that a Cottage the green and leather do not speak to me (my opinion) both are beautiful but not for the cottage. However I do see the blush as a close second. I feel your pain in making the choice still look for my perfect console. I know you will make the right choice for you and the cottage or not but is that not the fun.
Shannon Fox says
Exactly! The blue was soooo perfect.
Unfortunately, it’s discontinued and that leads to the sofa dilemma.

While each sofa you’ve pictured has its own merits, based on the insights and tidbits of your personal life that you have shared with your readers, the jade green would be my choice for your cottage space. Green is restful, relaxing (like a breath of nature indoors) and surprisingly versatile. We all are craving comforts and peace in our busy and stressful lives. I’ll end with one of my favorite quotes~~~
Come to the woods, for here is rest.
There is no repose like that of the green deep woods… John Muir
Shannon Fox says
Well… you should be a sofa salesperson.
SOLD 😉
Thanks for your insights, very much!!

Where did you find the cute squirrel bowl?
After following your leather link and seeing the couch in a room setting
I think it would work. Especially for men.
Shannon Fox says
Hello Frances 🙂
That squirrel bowl is from Grandin Road as well.
I pulled the link for you: https://www.grandinroad.com/gathering-bowl/1290665
Have a wonderful day!

Gotta say go with the gray. While the others are pretty, they just seem to make a bit too much of a statement all on their own. As a blogger being able to change things up for seasons/holidays is pretty important. Second choice would be the pink but not sure your son would love it if he was staying in the cottage.
Shannon Fox says
I am so lucky, that Austin is just like his dad, used to me decorating and has zero opinion, unless it’s his room 😉
The grey mist is definitely feels like the smart choice! Thank you 😉
Laurie Glick says
Shannon,
go with the grey mist. You’ll love how it looks!
Shannon Fox says
Thanks Laurie!!
It is pretty 🙂

Looking back through again lol that green site it’s glamorous though ♥️??if only I was so brave Haha
Shannon Fox says
I know.
She’s regal.
Just such a beauty!
Megan H says
If I could put the legs ?????? of the other couches on the leather it would be perfect to me but it’s just too mid century for me otherwise. But Still beautiful! My first choice is number 1. Can’t wait to see what you decide because I know it will be beautiful!!!
Shannon Fox says
Exactly. I like the idea of the leather, and what’s holding me back is the MCM styling.
Thanks for your thoughts!! ~Shannon
