Mantel Decor and How To DIY an Orchid Flower Vase
I’ve been thinking.
I talk.
A lot.
Just ask my mom, and basically anyone who knows me.
So it has been decided, by moi, that I am going to start doing more of it here on my blog.
I’ve tried to keep it short and sweet for a long time because I know how busy everyone is and I didn’t think anyone had time to listen to me rattle on about whatever I was sharing. I felt like I had a word limit or something. But I changed my mind. After all, you are stopping in to hear what I have to say and to visit me, so I’m going to add a little more ME into my posts.
Don’t worry though, politics, religion and my personal opinion on most things will be avoided. So it’ll still be pretty safe. Just more chatty.
Anyhow. About that ORCHID…
Since I am a crappy blogger, and only decided I would share this little “I did it” and you might want to do it too trick today, I tossed the original pot. Into the recylce bin. Yeah it was total cheese-ball plastic wannabe terracotta travesty and I was not going to be repurposing it for anything. Ever. Did you catch that I don’t plan ahead of time what I’ll be blogging about? That’s me. Unless it’s a sponsored post (I’d actually like to talk about that soon!) or I am doing a group project with other gals depending on me, I pretty much wing it. I really prefer to do things when the mood strikes.
How are you liking the ramble-y thing?
I will try to get a balance eventually. Promise.
One day I needed to water my birthday Orchid. That is not some rare variety you’ve never heard of, just an Orchid, I got for my birthday. I know… but always better to clear things up right?
So, I took it out of the decorative, and I use that term loosely, pot. The inner pot was clear and I thought hey, I’ve got a short stocky glass vase, I bet that would fit right in. Sure enough. Perfect fit. I really did not want to replace this beautiful flower into the pot it came in. (No offense honey, I love the Orchid!).
The glass vase was an improvement for sure, but not by much. I was still way too vanilla.
I never put my tray of gold tipped feathers away after Christmas. I just like them so much, I wasn’t ready to part with them. Well, I held a few of those up to the front of the vase and wallah! Sparkle. Check. I liked it!
To attach, I simply grabbed some Jute twine, wrapped it around the vase twice and secured it with a knot in the back.
Next, I slipped the feathers over, under, over into the twine and they stayed put. Worked for me.
Really simple, nothing fancy, nothing expensive. Just my speed. To spruce it uo that little bit more, you could wrap an orchid hawaiian leis around the base for that extra magic!
Jazz-Up A Plain Wrap Orchid DIY Style!
– The Orchid was a birthday gift.
– Vase. Try HomeGoods or Ross. I see these all the time for under $10.
– Just Twine. On hand.
( Tip: I get it at a discount hardware store, much cheaper than a craft store)
– Feather Info: See more here.
One thing lead to another… and I added it to the mantel. Plus a few things dusted with gold I had used for our New Years Eve mantel and next thing you know it was freshly decorated.
I just need to pick look #1 or #2.
There is only one thing different but hey, choices are hard.
I can’t decide if I love the Paris Picture there or not? I’ve had it for years and I’ve never actually decorated with it. It just never makes the cut and ends up back in the decor storage room. Not sure why, I adore the leopard print! Poor thing…
Jim and I bought the magnifying glass up at HomeGoods a few months ago. He picked it up while patiently waiting for me to finish up and thought it was pretty cool looking. I think he was surprised when I told him to put it in the cart, I thought it was pretty neat too. It’s got a great vibe to it! I know it’s not collected… but we can pretend we went somewhere fabulously exotic and needed a bone handle magnifying glass to examine something important.
Plus, the vision is starting to go, so there is always that…
Or, my little fern? I have ferns all over and I sort of liked the fresh green balancing the deep green leaves of the Orchid. Ferns seem to do really well for me in the house, even when we don’t see the sun for days. And days. Oh, and a few more days.
Go Pacific North West!
I just keep repeating to myself; “The rain keeps it green. The rain keeps it green.”
So Leopard or Fern? Which did you prefer?
PS: Some of the supplies are starting to come in so the EPIC Room Flip is moving forward again! Jim got the shelf bracket tracks put up tonight while I worked on this post. That gets us one step closer to getting everything out of the home decor storage room, so we can flip Austin into it.
PPS: I know lots of you are freezing your ___’s off so these are for you! {winks}
Hmmmm……I choose look #2! Beautiful orchid, by the way! Happy Valentine’s Day!~~Ang
Oh how pretty Shannon! Love the orchid and the feathers look great!
Thanks Debbie, I like it too and I am happy to have those little feathers still working hard 😉
