Simple DIY Ideas: Fall Home Tour
Welcome to the Autumn’s In The Air Fall Home Tour. If you are visiting from The Hamby Home, hello! If you missed it, make sure to pop over to Courtney’s and take a peek. Our house is on the very last leg of the tour, and we are the final home. In case you’ve never visited Fox Hollow Cottage, I should probably introduce myself, my name is Shannon. I live on the coast in the Pacific Northwest in a 1920’s cottage-style bungalow home with my husband, our son & two Maine Coon kitties.
Today, I’ll be sharing some Simple DIY Ideas during my Fall Home Tour to make your fall decorating easier and perhaps more affordable. Come on in…
Here’s the thing. I know it’s still really hot out there for a lot of you, and well, it’s been extra gorgeous here on the Oregon Coast. Like… extended Summertime gorgeous. And that can make shifting to Fall kind of hard.
Not to mention, not everyone has the room, the resources, or the budget for a full blown, “I bought out the pumpkin patch” Fall display. So, I’m sharing a budget-friendly, mild Fall here at the hollow. Just kind of taking it slow as I ease into the changing season… I’m so glad you stopped by to join me!
I know I might sound like a broken record, but when you want to decorate on a budget, one of the very first first things you’ll want to do is…
Shop Your House:
It’s a tried and true decorating go-to, because it works.
- Pull together anything and everything that might double as fall decor and take inventory
- Start with neutrals as your base
- Look for Orange, Gold, Russets & Reds
- Don’t be afraid to add an unexpected colors or patterns into the mix. In my world, Leopard print is a neutral
- Look for items you can layer to add warmth and texture to your decorating
- Use things in unexpected ways
You can create a simple display with any basic urn, some Spanish moss (or other filler) and a pumpkin. Put the three together and they make such a pretty statement!
Borrow and Trade with Family & Friends:
- If my mom and sister were closer we’d absolutely be doing this!
- Thanks goodness for my sister-in-law, because she is local and we trade and exchange things often.
Here, I’m using a beautiful Autumn plate that would normally belong in the kitchen or dining room, as a tray. It adds such pretty color and creates more impact when the smaller items are gathered together.
You can find my DIY tutorial for how to create an XL wood farmhouse style charger [here] – This project can also help you create a base for a table, or even a clock!
Check Habitat4Humanity, Vintage Shops & Thrift Stores:
- Lots of folks are purging as they decorate, and you never know what you might find!
- Looks for wreaths, and wreaths bases
- Baskets (these are easy to clean and/or spray paint)
- Home goods
- Copper is perfect for Autumn and I happen upon it frequently out thrifting.
- Assorted seasonal decor
- Shutter, doors & windows for layering
If you like my white wood picture ledge style shelves… I’ve got a DIY tutorial for them. They are really easy to make, and also easy to change the look of with a quick decor swap! Find the tutorial [here]
Fall Basics:
- Seasonal pillows
- Blankets & throws
- Candles
- Acorns, Assotred Nuts, Corn, Corn kernels & Wheat
- Vases & vase filler
- Pumpkins
- Non perishable pumpkins [Like this easy DIY version here]
- Corn stalks & hay bales
- Mums & seasonal flowers
- Lanterns
- Trays
- Baskets
- Scarecrows
- Fall signs
- Natural fiber & seasonal themed outdoor rugs
You might notice that I moved my farmhouse shelf since the last time you were over. It was [here] last, and I had fun giving it a little Fall fluff in it’s new location. Just a little fluff mind you, with a few fabric punkins and some dried Hydrangeas added to my everyday decor.
See? One Hydrangea, mixed in with my driftwood. It doesn’t have to be done heavy handed. A few more, and that Leopard thrown I was talking about, and it’s done.
I swear Hydrangeas are magic. Just as pretty fresh and they are dried.
Find it for FREE:
- Free Printables. This is a fabulous decorating resource! just browse Pinterest and you’ll find lots & lots. Here are ten in one place right [here] & another 23 [here] to get you started.
- You can also forage for clipping. Use branches that are changing color, as well as grasses and flowers. Hydrangeas are perfect! If you’ve got a friend with a great variety in their yard or on their property, ask to help them “prune”. I myself have been known to cut branches off the “big-brush pile pick up pile” in the street when I’ve found the perfect hued leaves. I really appreciate nature. And free home decor.
This is the 3rd year I’ve used these free leaves!
Spend Smart:
- Last year I invested in some fat, fluffy, velvet pumpkins. You can see how I used them last season [here]. They were very reasonably priced. I picked them up in the floral department at Safeway! I bought a few colors and a few sizes. I feel confident I’ll be using them for many seasons to come. I can also use them for multiple seasons/holidays.
- Support makers. Buy handmade from small businesses. This year, I bought a few patterned fabric pillows from Laura at the Junque Cottage.
- Buy staples, the kind of things your can use again & again, year after year.
- Buy what you can’t thrift or make yourself.
- Stick to a particular color scheme or style so that you can add to and build on to your collection, instead of chasing a different trend every year.
Thank you so much for stopping by today. I always look forward to your visits & comments and I greatly appreciate both. I’ll have more to share in the coming days ahead, and I hope you’ll join me! I’ve got a room makeover reveal, a giveaway and some more Fall decor in store!! I hope I shared a few helpful tips or ideas today and if you’ve got any feel free to share, either here in the comments, or over on Facebook or Instagram. See you around, xo Shannon

In my world, leopard is neutral, too! What a great post, friend … you’ve covered it all when it comes to decorating one’s home for Fall! You make it look so simple, with gorgeous results! I love how you styled your farmhouse shelves! And, your vignettes … well, you know I love them every.single.time. !! Please pack up your car and head East … I’ll be waiting for you so we can do that “trade” thing you mentioned! Happy Fall … glad to have been a part of a fun blog hop with you again!
Shannon at Fox Hollow Cottage says
Oh my gosh can you IMAGINE us trading??? Because we are really drawn to a lot of the same things. In pairs. LOL!! Not as evidenced here, but I love twos. We must be decadents of Noah. 😉 Happy Fall my sweet friend. You home, looks sensational!!!!
