DIY Pop Up Guest Room
I don’t have a dedicated guest room.
If you don’t either, keep reading and I’ll share what I do to make my company as comfortable as possible when they visit overnight.
If you are like me, and you have overnight guests, but don’t have a “guestroom” proper you might find yourself in a bit of a pickle.
There are times you can offer the master suite to your guests, or possibly a child’s room, etc… but when it’s not an option or your guests refuse to see you displaced from your bedroom, creating a pop-up guest room is a great way to make your guests their own special space.
Let’s create a temporary guest room!
- Start with a blank canvas. Clear a corner or section of the room that you can give over to your house guest(s).
- The space I’m sharing today is geared to my mom who actually prefers the living room to displacing our son. We all know mom makes the rules.. so the living room it is. That means the couch will act as a bed so I need to make a room around that.
- The first thing I added was an end table. (My Target Bar Cart will be playing the role of end table.)
- I filled the table top with a wickedly delicious scented candle (my mom loves them) and someplace to take off jewelry at bedtime.
- I also made sure to add task lighting for reading. It’s nice to have a light that can be turned off in the evening without getting up out of “bed”.
- The bottom rack has an old school locker bin filled with books and magazines. It’s nice to have something to read or flip through in case your guests are up earlier or later than the rest of the house.. or, simply to relax and unwind during down time.
- A handy candle lighter plus a tablet and pen are present for quick notes. Sometimes my mom is up early and runs out before I wake up. It’s nice to have a notepad to jot down a “ran out for coffee, etc… note”. Some pain reliever is there too, just in case.
- Next up, I wanted a place for her to hang things like keys and sunglasses. When you aren’t at home, it’s so nice to have somewhere specific to put those sort of things. I think it makes you feel more settled.
- I always let my mom have my car when she visits. If I’m working she can run around town if she feels like it and we aren’t chasing the keys around the house this way!
- I planned the perfect temporary drop zone by using a Command Key Rail for the keys and sunglasses.
- I thought having the TV remote handy for her as well would be smart, so I popped a Command Clear Caddy on the wall too. Everyone has got a cell phone now, and the Command Clear Caddy is just right for docking a cell phone for charging. These are really versatile and so easy to use. The Command strips go on the caddy, peel the tabs off, place on the wall. Simple. (always follow the package instructions.)
- I placed a Command Round Cord Clip next to the caddy and the charger can stay plugged in and ready for action. I know I am forever chasing my charger around when I go places, so I think having it one place will make it easier to remember where it is, and harder to forget when you leave.
- The Command Key Rails come in Quartz or Slate. I jazzed mine up just for fun with a little paint for a splash of Summer color.
- Our kitchen is close-by but it’s nice for your guests to have water and a few snacks at hand just for them. Gather bottled water and a few favorite treats in a basket or on a tray. If they drink wine, maybe a bottle, corkscrew and a wine glass/or glasses. Every guest will have unique requirements.
- Just like with the sunglasses and keys, it’s great to have someplace to put your purse! Or a small laptop, reader satchel, etc…
- The Command Jumbo Hooks hold up to 7.5 pounds! These are hard working hooks guys.
- I know I don’t want my bag thrown on the floor somewhere, so I imagine my guests don’t either.
- The Command Jumbo Hook will keep those cute bags and satchels up off the floor and out of the way too.
The luggage rack.
- This is a must. No one wants to be living out of a travel bag or suitcase on the floor.
- I was lucky enough to run across the perfect luggage rack at a local boutique for a song.
It doesn’t have to be fancy or perfect to show that you care.
In the bathroom, I added temporary hooks for extra towels, an empty basket for get-ready stuff and special soap and shampoos.. it’s those little touches that make your guests feel extra welcome and relaxed.
Every guest is unique.
Just try to make them feel special by thinking of the things that will make their stay as comfortable as possible. An alarm clock, city road map, botanical tour schedule, the number to the movie theater or the best take-out in town might be perfect for them.
I hope that seeing how easily you can pop-up a temporary guest room, will make having overnight guests a little less stressful when you don’t have a guest room.
That is the beauty of the Command products. You can put them up and :poof: pull that tab and take them down when you’re done. No commitment!
