Happenings At The Hollow 4
Hi guys! Happy Saturday to you.
(unless you’re not reading this today, then happy whateverday to you!)
It’s mishmash catch up time!
I love that I can do a fun, casual collection of the this-&-thats that aren’t really enough for a blog post, but I don’t want to miss out on sharing.
I’ll work backwards. Because I’ve got some stuff saved up.
I pick up Austin from school everyday. He has a car, a permit… but no license yet. He’s doing really well and it’s almost time to go take that test! So for now, I pick him up in his car so he can drive home. He is most familiar with it and he likes to drive it best. Which makes sense all around. So anyhow, I was waiting to pick him up and there is a big staircase flanked by green space. It was full of sweet peas, like it is every year. They grow wild, are very beautiful, and get mowed to the ground every time the campus guys get around to it. So I helped myself to a few.
These are a few quick pics I snapped with my iphone using the CAMERA+ app. I think it was 99 cents, but may have been $4.99. Sorry, I can’t recall.
The color came out really well! I only added back lighting as a edit function and my watermark later in picmonkey. It’s a great little app. If you have an iphone, I suggest it! I use the backlight almost every time. It works wonders. I like to take candid shots with my phone, but it’s often so dark here. That back light is a wonder!!
I am crazy for Sweet Peas! Last year I went on lots of walks collecting them growing in the wild but this year we were so involved in the flooring install, I sort of missed Summer. I know we are all really getting ready for Fall and the shift in the seasons… but these are being much enjoyed!! In real life, I hang onto Summer as long as I can. Even as I start to decorate for Fall. It’s like I’ve got a split personality!
I also played with picmonkey, these shots were taken in the overcast morning light with my Nikon. They are so different compared to the bright afternoon shots I took with my iphone. Lighting always amazes me in what it can do to a photograph! Our eye and the lens pick up such different colors. The quality of light really changes. I notice the morning light is clear and true, while the waning evening light is very blue and cool.
I popped the Sweet peas in the cutest little tiny teacup and saucer that I got in the floral department at Safeway for $2.50 – Big splurge there! Isn’t it the cutest little cup!? They had plates too, but I can not buy another plate. My home decor and craft storage room is bursting at the seams. Again. I don’t even want to think about it. Basically, I’ve got to purge and clean that thing every 6 months it seems.
In this photo I used the POSTERIZE effect.
In this the 3rd weave in TEXTURES
I like this one… it’s like, Mermaid Flowers.
I used water #1 in TEXTURES. I think I’m going to start playing around with my own photos and printing them for temporary artwork. I have an idea. Well, I have lots of ideas. More then time, like most of us I’m sure.
So, onto a few weekends ago. We ran across. Wait, Jim spied and whipped the car around would be more like it, for a yard sale in the tiniest town ever. It’s a blink and miss it for sure!! Well. They had vintage Ball jars. Jim had spotted them while I was looking the other way out across the water. (Yes he gets the Awesome Husband Award for that one!!) The husband and wife running the sale were really nice. They had previously had a space or a shop, I didn’t get that real clearly? But, he was the Ball jar guy. He knew all about them and was telling me about the markings and the values.
I just knew I loved them! I’m going to look some up soon and share the markings more closely. It really is starting to pique my interest. That some of the glass jars are 100 old, it’s just amazing they are still around. Some of the jars I got are hand lettered. Someone had wrote, in the glass, the BALL name. Wow. They are really funky, and so not uniform. So of course they are my favorites! I scored big time. They were $5 a piece. and I got 12. I did leave some behind.
I got more vintage stuff there as well. Coca Cola bottles, a silver butter dish bottom and some cow tags!
Cow tags? Why, I have no idea, I just thought they were cool.
(raw photo. lol. this is pre scrubbed and sanitized)
Here are my new babies drying. So pretty!!!!
Another reason we keep hand sanitizer and baby wipes in the car!
Gotta be junking prepared.
I got this cool white metal first aid supply box for $1 and I’m going to use it in Austin’s room. I’ve been gathering some stuff for a bit. Not sure when I’ll get a chance to put it all together?
And this is something that just had SUCH great patina. I had to buy it. It’s a vintage fire pump. I’m not sure if it’s brass or copper, but Jim looked it up on ebay and they sell for $80. I won’t tell you what I paid! I’ll get some close ups of the label some day and share them. See how I didn’t say “soon”. I’m getting better.
Y’all know that “soon” could be later tonight, or 8 months from now. hahaha
My $4 Globe. It was in great shape and I liked the really rich blues shades!! Austin and I figured this was over 40 years old. It was just a regular garage sale/tag sale find.
I think it looks just right next to my vintage milk crate. I got that for $10 last Spring.
It is so heavy with the reinforced metal sides. Whoa. Completely Awesome though.
The lady who sold it to me told me a whole story about how she bought it and her husband thought she was crazy, like 30 years ago. I told her it was in good hands!! That I was crazy too.
I completely PILLOW splurged at HomeGoods. I don’t get up there often. It’s a four hour drive round trip. But when I do, I go for it! And spend all the money I saved buy buying junk the other 75% of the time!!!!
I got a few new ones. This is my had to have it favorite though. I instagrammed it while I was in the store.
Yeah. It was coming home with me.
It’s a Cynthia Rowley (like I care?) Mongolian Fur number I just want to PET. So soft. There was another twice this size, but it was twice the price too, so I made due with this one. Easier to store when not in use. Right?
I’ll temper that with my other Fall decor.
Meet my .50 cent yellow enamel wear from Norway and my year old Fall branches that I cut off the guy across the ways city pick up trash pile last year. Yes I did!
We had no Fall color branches on our entire property. What is a girl to do?
I am sure you are sufficiently bored now with my latest finds!! I better get on to the upcoming news.

I know! It’s so hard. My house really isn’t super big. I would say average? I bring home far too much junk to be sure! I’m sure that is why I am always getting over stuffed in my storage room. LOL! Happy Fall and blessing to you as well. Thank you!!

That was a great find. My price for sure 😉 Oh yes… picmonkey. I use it every day. You’ll love it!!!!
Mary Stone says
Thank you for this post. The sweetpeas are so LOVERLY! I planted some when I was a little girl…not many grew as my mother who was not a gardener had me plant the seeds in the shade. You are so fortunate to be able to gather these!
Enjoyed the blue Ball jars…here where I live (in the Central Valley, Kern County, Bakersfield, CA) we do not have the opportunity to purchase finds such as yours that day. If there are these items, they are in antique shops which are costly. Even the thrift stores have raised their prices…I thought thrift stores were for people who did not have much money…now the prices are geared for people with money.
I did find some blue Ball jars at Walmart (of course not old)…but I bought a few at $1.47 each…will need to look at the other Walmarts here in town to see if they have some more; I was hoping to find the little half pint size however, no luck. I love that color blue. You are so fortunate to have found those antique ones for $5.00 apiece!
Thank you for showing all the goodies you and your husband found that weekend…and yes, he is a treasure!
Warmly, Mary
And how is that baby doing that you held the donation drive for? I pray she is fully recovered.
Shannon at Fox Hollow Cottage says
Hi Mary! I planted sweet peas a few years ago here at this house but the deer enjoyed them a little too much for my liking, so I gave up. Yes, we were incredibly lucky to run across those jars, and at that price! He told me a few were $30.00 in his store/shop/space? I believe that, those are the ones I walk away from all the time. We really hit the jackpot for sure!! I know just what you are saying, I see people share things all the time, that I never run into, so I get it. I did a giveaway not too long ago for the re release of the “aqua” jars. That was FUN! The baby is VERY WELL, fully recovered ( a miracle!) and back home with her parents. Thank God!!!!

You gots lots of happening at the Hollow Shannon. I love your flower shots, pretty pretty!
Sharon says
What great finds. I love the peonies in the cute little cup. I think I would have had to pick them too. And, I’m coveting your globe! I wish we lived closer so we could go thrifting together!
Your photos are beautiful. Make me want to go buy a DSLR right now…..until then, I’ve got to find a way around low light with my digital.
Looking forward to our first chat with the Book Club. I might be late since Tuesday is my daughter’s bday.
Enjoy your weekend!!
Shannon at Fox Hollow Cottage says
Sharon, I always wonder how we would all do thrifting together? Would we all want the same things? hahaha. My advice on the low light is using a mirror, or a large white sheet to bounce some light off of. It’s still a challenge with all our grey days, but better. I got the Nikon D3200 last year before the holidays at Costco. Best purchase ever. I love that thing!!!! One day, I’ll get another lens or two… but not today. See you at Book Club if you can make it 😉

Thank you for sharing your finds. I really enjoyed it – almost like going on a trip without living my dining room table.. Good score on the ball jars.
Shannon at Fox Hollow Cottage says
You don’t realize how much junk you acquire till you go to share? Whoops!!
patty says
Hi Shannon, I enjoyed catching up with you and seeing your wonderful finds and pictures. I love to play with my pictures as you did – and I didn’t know there was a camera app. I will look into it. Love your Ball jars and your globe. I am in search of a globe but I want to alter it somehow. I have seen them painted with chalkboard paint. Have a great rest of the weekend!
Shannon at Fox Hollow Cottage says
I have seen that as well. I looked for a long time to find the right one at the right one. I just wanted one. Not a whole collection. The coloring and the lat and long bands got me on this one 😉 Plus the $4 price.
