Target Bar Cart Painted Furniture Makeover
If you follow along on instagram, you might have seen me posting from Target about finding this great bar cart for a song!
I nabbed it right up and hauled it home. Where I proceeded to look at it because something was “off”. In it’s original state, it featured a faux wood design on the top and bottom shelves. I’m not a mixy-matchy girl when it comes to wood tones. It’s just not my thing. I didn’t feel like the tones on the shelves and my floor were playing well together at all.
To rectify that, I cracked open a can of Maison White and got busy.
Yes. That is a chop stick. The perfect makeshift paint stir sticks. Because I only have 8 million but never one on-hand!
With the Maison White working it’s magic, my eye immediately stopped twitching. I kid. It wasn’t that bad.
You might have actually noticed it when I revealed the new shutters last week? I didn’t fuss over it much since it was the divas big day {winks}. Those shutters rule the room. Man I love them. Mwah-mwah-mwah!
(oh. and the mirror? yes, that will be getting a makeover in time. I’ve got a story to share about that as well.)
Anyhow. You know how slow I am when it comes to making any paint color choices so I left the Maison White alone. I knew the next step would come to me in time. Sure enough, I got this great little roll of Scotch Washi Tape and the gold could not have matched any better. It was going to be perfect.
This is why I don’t rush things, letting it happen in it’s own time always works out better for me. If it’s not flowing or the inspiration is not coming, I step away or wait until an idea strikes.
See!? Isn’t the washi tape the perfect match?
Next, I used the washi tape roll as a guide to draw gold circles in a random pattern with a gold metallic Sharpie. I filled them in with Riviera using a small, angled craft brush. It’s the perfect aquamarine blue and practically screams SUMMERFUN. I finished with Lime Wax in Chalk White. I wanted my Riviera colored polka dots a bit muted and sort of subdued so this was the right finishing step for my project.
Please Note: This is where I tell you to; “Do as I say, not as I do”.
The Sharpie was NOT wax compatible and this was almost a do-over. When I started to wax, the Sharpie started to smear. I noticed immediately and carefully waxed around the gold Sharpie. I applied wax over the Riviera circles with a Q-tip. I’ts not a huge deal for me, because I know this is not permanent, (sort of like the Sharpie) and I’m the only one who sets anything on the surface.
Might I suggest adding your Riviera circles first, and outlining with a gold craft paint instead. That way you can wax with no worries!
Oh! Another tip.
When you jump out of the car to clip free Saint Ann’es Lace along the roadside… yeah… make sure you put your phone away first.
This is a real time saver. It will also save you from having a mini panic attack while you are stuck on a bridge that is under construction and notice how pretty the old railing is and think what a great photo that would make. Only to realize…
Yep, you don’t have your phone.
Because it was on your lap when you jumped out of the car to get those (now not looking so free..) flowers.
Luckily we were only about 10 minutes down the road and were able to go right back.
I would have taken a photo to show you my phone, face down, in the weeds, tall grass and wild flowers.. about 6 inches from a rain filled gully.. but I couldn’t, because my phone was, well, you know ^^^
It was miraculously undamaged.
These could have been some reallllly spensive’ free flowers.
So basically;
Score a cool bar cart. Yes.
Wax over Sharpie. No.
Get free flowers along the roadside. Yes.
Hold you phone in your lap. No
Got it? Good :))) I’ll be sure to pass on my other pearls of wisdom as I screw up so you can avoid my pitfalls.

My son smashed his ipod the same way as your phone went missing. Except he wasn’t gathering flowers for a post.
Love it! Great tips 😉 No wax over sharpie!
So so pretty Shannon – love the blue with gold and white. Thanks for the tips!!
That is so stinkin cute. The flowers are such a nice touch!
You are So funny. I think this bar cart’s paint job is really cute and I like the cart much better than when it had the wood look. I will think of you and your phone every time I see Queen Anne’s lace now. lol!
Oh Shannon… I just saw dollar signs flashing when I thought of having to replace it. After I thought about all the lost photos of course! Whew. It was such a relief. I knew it was there, because where else would it be? But I sure was glad to see it.
This is adorable!! I love the colors so much. Beautiful makeover Shannon!
Thanks!! I Love the white. And the polka dots. (for now) 😉
Thank you for those very important pearls of wisdom! And the makeover is perfection! I’m a big fan of all things gold these days too!
