Spring Mantel ~ Burlap Banner & Fabric Flowers

I’ll be sharing today’s post over at
with my girl Gina for the
Craft Party today!
If you saw my Spring Mantel yesterday you
know I promised to give a
quicky tutorial on my
DIY accents.
It shouldn’t take long.
Why?
Because, we all know
I AM A LAZY CRAFTER.
{I swear, I really am going to trademark that!}
For a refresher, here is the mantel again.

My inspiration for all the accents was
some cheapo “utility fabric”
(which I had never heard of)
that I picked up for $2.99 a yard at JO-ANN’s.
I brought it home and it was a perfect match for the new wall color I painted above the fireplace.
The green felt super Springy too!
I really loved the combo. 
It has some body to it also so it’s not all floppy.
It was great to work with as far as crafting went!
I would definitely use it again.
 
I’ll start from the top.

This bunny is standing on an empty
Almond Roca candy can from Christmastime.
That’s why I had to eat that candy, I knew I would need that can for a future project. So I suffered for my craft and gobbled up ate the candy and saved the can. So it’s completely justified. See?
Anyway, I wrapped it in some fabric then
glue-gunned it along the seam
and added some ribbon.
Done.
So super easy to duplicate!

I made some flowers for my mantel
using fabric & coffee filters.
I added stems by securing some floral wire to the flower buds with a bit of gun.
I added lime green pipe cleaners & extra fabric scraps around the stems for some detail, with a few of the flowers getting little fabric leaves.

An old jar was re purposed as a pretty vase by adding pink Easter grass, a piece of fabric scrap &  pink grosgrain ribbon.
I made the roses just like this;

FABRIC FLOWERS:
1. Cut fabric in square.
2. Fold in half, then half again. Cut in circle.
4. Snip into the circle shape starting small and getting wider, making a spiral as you go.
5. To assemble flower, start rolling at smaller end. Secure at base with glue.
Attach to floral wire with drop of glue.
I use my glue-gun for just about everything!
I added a few leaf shaped pieces of fabric to my flower stems.
This fabric is firm enough to keep it’s shape.
I just sort of scrunched-up the coffee filters to look like Carnation flowers. No real technique there.
The fabric flowers are great alternative to fresh, because they are inexpensive and they never wilt and die.
All though, if I could have fresh flowers in every room…
I would.
Now For The Banner!
Okay, so I made the super-simple banner with burlap and more of the utility fabric.

I tend to craft at night, so my “during” pictures are always sort of dark. Sorry bout’ that!

 

I first cut a burlap triangle and then a fabric one a little smaller, to layer on top.
I did not measure. (Told ya I am lazy!) I did the first triangle, then layered the next piece on top to get them about the same shape and size. I knew they did not have to be “perfect”.
So I had a master burlap triangle, and a master fabric triangle.
When I had the amount of pieces I wanted,
I glued the fabric on top of the burlap, then added a aqua bit of ribbon, again, with the glue gun.
I could have added a lot more embellishments but I was going for a clean, simple look.
You may want to layer it up more by adding on buttons, letters, glitter, etc…
Have fun and make it your own!
I determined the length of jute twine I was going to use, then, with my center flag first, I glued the twine to my flag on the face, along the top. I went out to the edges from there adding on with equal lengths of space in between the flags as I went. I used embroidery floss to hang them to my cup hooks.They are white like my mantel and don’t show up much. I am always hanging something up, so they are permanent for me.

 

 


A little drop of glue is all you need to get the embroidery floss to stick and it’s strong enough too. The flags are not heavy at all!
You can’t even see the bead of glue holding
the jute twine in place unless you get right on top of it so don’t worry about it showing.
This is only the second banner I have ever made…
it was simple, fun and I am pretty happy with how it turned out.
The materials were very easy to work with.

It makes me smile.
So, I guess that means it’s doing it’s job!

    I can’t stop thinking about how cheery your mantel is! That blue wall is just fab! What us girls will do for a craft. I mean, you HAD to force yourself to eat that nasty Almond Roca. lol! Love all of the cute crafts. The rolled paper flowers are my fav!

    For a lazy crafter there are sure a lot of great details in there. If you start a lazy crafter club, I’ll join too. I think that describes me as well. Probably why I don’t like labor intensive projects, even if I do ’em.

    You by far are no lazy crafter. When you see my craft, that screams L A Z Y! LOL…but OK if you want to trademark it, just call me thing 2. I love that fabric, it is so pretty. Love the flowers too.
