Cozy Cottage Home Decorating
As I type this it is pouring, and I mean pouring out.
It is most definitely time for some cozy atmosphere in the house!
The heater has been kicking-on in the early mornings and late in the evenings, and we actually had our first big storm of the season last weekend.
Power outage and all.
… and so it begins.
The coastal elements of Summer are gone. Well, almost.
A gold starfish happened to suck onto the coffee table and refused to move.
I admired it’s tenacity.
I did my norm. Changed out my pillows, warmed things up with Autumnal colors and was very generous with throws.
The brick colored cable knit throw is my new favorite. It was a surprise gift. When it arrived and I opened it, I was delighted with how soft it was. As a whole, and the actual yarn used to knit it. It’s very marshmallow-y. Sort of squishy soft. When it comes to any comfy stuff or bedding, I’m all about texture. I guess you could say I’m very tactile. I like zillion thread count sheets, mounds of soft blankets and I’m a pillow whore in bed, just as much as I am when I decorate! My husband teases me with The Princess And The Pea comparisons.
In a word, this throw is thesoftestbestestcableknitthrowIhaveevertouchedinmywholeentirelife
On that pillow note, the Donna Karen matte sequin pillow I scored last year at HomeGoods is making an appearance.
This was found on clearance no less! It was waiting for me.
Still {heart} it mucho-much.
A great thing about the changing seasons when it comes to decorating, is tucking things away as they change, and then getting them out again a year later.
The gifts that keep on giving.
Just another one of reason I’m so set on buying only what I love, and what speaks to me, regardless of trend.
When I shop for decor, it’s like I’m shopping for pieces to add to my homes wardrobe. I’m curating a collection of items that will work together and that I can build on over the years. Many of which pull double and triple duty, because I buy things that can slide from one season to the next or be used in different ways.
My new lamp is a great example. It can go coastal during the Summer months, but be at ease in the Fall as well, with the natural texture of the twine wrapped base. I think it’s fitting in beautifully.
TIP: All three of my lamps feature the same shade style and color, though the base styles and finishes vary. This keeps them from fighting each other and maintains the visual balance in the room from being too heavy in one area or another. Your eye flows smoothly around the room.
I spend very little on dedicated seasonal decor. I usually get a few new things, but nothing major. Often thrifted, sometimes new. These little qt’s for instance can be used year-to-year and were under $8 for a large bag full. I sprinkle them about and the just adds a kiss of Autumn flavor without costing much. Things like these are great additions if you love to decorate, but don’t want to spend a lot. I’ve already used the heck out of them!
I adore the look of mounds and piles of Pumpkins, both indoors and out, and Mum filled porches too, don’t get me wrong! I decided this year I would be very frugal with the pumpkin buying though. I bought three little swirly stemmed minis, and that was enough. Could I have bought oodles and went nuts? YES! I refrained though. It was a tiny bit hard, but with no party and living in a neighborhood with no trick or treat traffic, they were not really necessary. Don’t hold me to this though, next year I could go bananas and completely make up for being so good this year!
I’m sure you wanted to know all that right? Sorry, I get a little chatty sometimes!!
Back to the refreshing of the home. Everyone needs a wild turkey feather or two… right!
And yes, that is a statement. Not a question. hahaha
There are those cute punkins again!
I can’t help it. They just tickle me.
I’ll be turning the camera around and shooting the dining area, mantel and venturing into the kitchen in the next few days! We are completely Fall’afied here at the hollow. It’s been over a year since I took any photos of the kitchen. Last time, we didn’t even have the wood floors yet.
I know.
So fired.
What kind of blogger am I?
Basically, all the Summery goodness has been erased and I’m resigned to the fact that I will be rained in for the next 9 months.
Thank goodness for yummy candles and marshmallow-y soft throws!
And electricity, and the internet and books.
… and cookies.
The End.
until next time…

Thank-you to Birch Lane for supplying the Ryan Glass Table Lamp. Living in a 1920’s era bungalow, we are sorely lacking in overhead lighting, so lamps are a blessing and a necessity. Having a stylish one… a big bonus!!
