Open Cabinets in a Cottage Kitchen
I recently ripped the doors off my cabinets.
And I could not be happier.
And the Dollar Tree
Shelf Liner on the Cabinet Backs,
Well… it Makes Me Smile!
I recently shared our
Cottage Style Budget Kitchen Makeover.
Today I want to share a few
before & after photos I took while giving our kitchen a little re’fresher.
{by removing our glass front cabinet doors}
I have never taken many photos of this section of the kitchen… and I finally realized why.
I have never liked the upper cabinets, or more precisely, the glass front cabinet doors!
I had been mulling over a few knobs styles, different decor, painting the backs, etc…
Oh.
for Years!
{sadly, I am completely serious!}
Then, one evening, I decided it was time for a change!
Because things just hit me like that.
I know you understand!
fat “F” on my project.
I have no “taking the doors off pictures”.
I was doing it alone though and I didn’t want to break any glass while unscrewing the doors and taking them off.
Safety First!
Right?
I was pretty sure I liked it right away.
It was still blah though.
Like.
SUPER BLAH.
I knew I did not want to commit to a permanent paint color on the back.
Hello? I am notoriously neutral. lol.
Yep, even with my love of aqua.
I had 2 rolls of shelf liner on hand that I had picked up at the Dollar Tree.
I intended to line some shelves with it.
Because that is what it’s for.
Funny thing…
LAURA from Our Prairie Home
had just done a fabulous makeover on her
Shabby Farmhouse China Cabinet
and had lined the back of it
with the same exact paper.
So…
I was going to look like a
gigantic copycat if I did the same thing.
Here’s the thing though,
I am cheap.
(or “frugal” says my mom)
And it was such a thrifty solution.
Lucky me, Laura loves me and didn’t mind.
So, I decided to give it a shot.
As it measured out, it took 6 rolls.
That means $6 bucksfor the whole project.
Sweet!
I pretty much went with my favorites!
Thrifted silver & lots of white.
I thoroughly enjoy
getting to actually SEE what is on
my upper cabinet shelves now.
I took off my glass front cabinet doors.
Lined the backs.
… and I feel like I have a new kitchen.
$6 dollars and a little bit of my time.
A pretty good deal.
Appearance in full on any site other then Fox Hollow Cottage is theft!

Looks like a fabulous piece of built in furniture! Love the bit of color and of course all your silver and white thrifty finds!
I love a good open cabinet – this one rocks!

Whoa! How gorgeous! YOu did such a beautiful job. Love the paper you used and I love how you’ve dressed your shelves. Now you must be showing us this area much more.
Be a sweetie,
Shelia 🙂
Looks wonderful!
It looks like a piece of furniture now. And what’s that saying?.. imitation is the best form of flattery? So you and Laura both will be flattered when everyone copies you.

WUNDERBAR!!! Love it Shannon! And Cheap = Good…
Shannon- That looks great! I don’t care if you are a copy-cat-your cabinets look beautiful. I think it really adds just a subtle touch of color to your kitchen and showcases your china. Love it! xo Diana
Great alternative use for the liner. I love a multi purpose thrifty find. Pinning it. 🙂
Love this. I am sort of renovating my kitchen into farmhouse as I’m able. (Crappy health stuff. It’ll get done eventually.) I have my buttermilk white paint to paint everything. And a new butcher block counter top and apron front ikea sink is coming for my anniversary. And i am in LOVE with the idea of open front upper cabinets. But what do i do with my stuff? My cabinets aren’t filled with pretties. They’re filled with dailies. Mason glass jar glasses will be great out where they can be seen. And the pretty casserole dishes im not worried about. Well kind of. They don’t always stack pretty. But the plates. There’s nothing special about them other than their age. (Tan and blue pfaltzgraph i found at goodwill. Entire antique set with oddball salt and peppers and canisters and everything for $25. Bought because the salt and peppers go for $25 each on ebay. Not to mention the rest if it. But i hate them. They’re not me or what i want and im not in a position to buy what i want yet so…. anyway.)
But how do i display this stuff that we use every.single.day in such a way that it’s attractive and won’t be messy looking when i yank off all the door fronts? (In an eventual attempt-goal to get hubbs to agree to open shelving up top which is what i really really want in the end.) Some days i wish one of ypu designy folks loves close enough to swap ideas in my kitchen for food or something. Lol!
And i truly don’t mean this post to be as whiny as i know it sounds. I’ve just spent and entirr year with one cabinet door off trying to figure out a way to make it work in our house.
I love it, Shannon! What a pretty liner pattern, too. I did mine shortly after we moved in because it looked so “blah”, but I left the doors on. I had always wanted a glass door cabinet and now I had one. I put all my whites in mine. I did mine on the spur of the moment though so I just used some of the fabric I had here and some cardboard from the moving boxes. It’s totally removable, but I have to say, like you, I love it every time I see it! I think for such a “frugal” project : ) it was one of the best I did since we’ve been in our new place.
Hi Shannon,
Your cabinets look fantastic!!!!
Mr. Sissie would die if I took the doors off of our cabinets, even though I would like too. I guess I will gradually work my way into that project.
Love the white mixed with the silver too and the paper backing is perfect.
hugs
Sissie
Love it! So much better and the paper is so pretty! Thanks for sharing. x Julie
I LOVE THIS!!! It really is so lovely! I wonder if my dollar tree still has that adorable liner? So, so pretty!
