To Do List Update: Window Coverings
Come flash back with me… to the day we completed our new wood floors. Let me share with you the first words out of Jim’s mouth when he stood back to admire his handy work;
“I don’t care what it costs, we have got to get rid of those mini blind!”
Let’s freeze here for a minute.
How many times have you made a change in your home, that led to another change, because the “new” thing made everything else look so sad, tired and terrible?
More times than you can probably count right? Us too!
Well, let me tell you the heavens opened up and the angels sang. I loved my husband in that moment like you can not believe. I knew those mini blinds looked pitiful but I was not going to utter a word (at least not yet). How lucky am I that I didn’t have to put operation new window coverings into affect? I mean I didn’t even have to strategize operation new window coverings. Score! You know, I’m blonde and that thinkin’ makes my head hurt. Joking. Just joking {wink}.
I talked a little about window coverings being on our to do list this year in this post here, and how I was pretty sure I knew what I wanted but I did my due diligence and looked into other options anyway to be sure.
With all the back light, it’s hard to tell… but the blinds really just look extra cheap and tacky with our pretty new floors showing them up! I’ve learnt from this mistake. If you’re going to invest in Window blinds, make sure they are good quality, as this will mean they will last longer and look a lot better in your home, unlike these cheap blinds that I have.
If you know my struggle of having cheap blinds are in desperate need of a change, why not check out companies like Shuttercraft (if you live in the midlands, UK) to finally make a change to your home, even if it something small. This can actually make such a difference to your room’s overall aesthetic.
I know, how sad for us right? But hey, we went though our brand new refrigerator leaking, which resulted in water damage. Then we saved like crazy for the new floors. Next we spent the better part of our Summer doing all the work ourselves, so don’t hate us too much okay?
So, back to those window coverings…
I shopped and compared, already knowing what I wanted.
Plantation Shutters. The holy grail of window coverings.
I love them. I’ve always loved them. We’ve had them in previous homes and I’ve missed not having them in this one. I knew they would be perfect for our living room. Plantation Shutters are timeless. They are also incredibly hard working, long lasting and offer exceptional privacy. A real long term investment but I think a very worthwhile one. They have a fantastic R factor for controlling heat and cold too. Something else of great importance to me was the ability to be able to clean whatever I selected. I know from past experience, you can dust and wipe down shutters on occasion. This will keep them looking like new for a long, long time. If you’re in the UK and are looking to get award winning shutter designs fitted in the windows of your home, I hear the company Shuttercraft may be what you’re looking for! There are loads of different shutter designs that you can use though, so it’s important to make sure that you get the right one for you. For example, you might decide that you like the look of these West Pier Shutters.
I am beyond thrilled to be working with Blinds.com on this project. After speaking with a designer, we decided on the Norman Woodlore shutters for our home. They are a faux wood window shutter. We have used this product previously as well. We selected the composite shutters in California due to the relentless heat that can ruin a real wood product and we’re getting them again because of the UV inhibitor they have which helps to ensure resistance to moisture as well. Living in the PNW, it gets a little “damp” here. To say the least.
They look just like wood shutters. You’d never know they were faux.
They work perfect for locations like these too!
(You know… damp. Kind of like living in Oregon.)
Soon… this will be me. I think I’ll sit in my big chair in the living room and just look at them once they are installed. Maybe I’ll even sleep on the couch to make sure they don’t disappear overnight? Nah. I love my princess and the pea bed too much! And where would my 47 pillows go? Okay 6, I exaggerate.
For now, I go to sleep at night dreaming of pretty little shutters jumping fences and ticking of the days until our shutters are complete and our order ships.
We’ll be busy while we wait though, because while I think plantation shutters suit our home style to a T, as with everything else in our almost 100 year old home, it’ll take a little finagling. That means Jim and I have to do some DIY to one set of windows so we can get the shutters of my dreams to fit properly. If you have an old house too, or one that offers some challenges, check back and we’ll show the pretty simple fix we have planned to accommodate the fit requirements.
Oh my. You don’t even know how lucky I feel to be calling this a before picture!!!!
Oh, and guess what? I just looked and all the window shutters are actually on sale right now.
Plus, blinds.com has free shipping. (I really like companies that offer free shipping)
Thanks for stopping in to see what we’re up too – Can’t wait to give you the next update!!
