Dream Furniture Cottage Living Room Reveal
Today I get to invite you into my home to share my living room reveal with you, and my dream furniture! Something I’ve wanted for literally 18 years. Eighteen years. That’s the time in which you could grow a human, and get them through school, and into legally official adulthood!
Eighteen full and complete years of longing for the simplicity of white slip-covered furniture. I went with family friendly furniture at our California house and next, a super practical, giant tan sectional that even had a hide-a-bed and a recliner at each end. Lastly, many of you were familiar with my pinky-beige sofa and chair and a half that I sold over a year ago.
That was something I’ve never done before. I leapt, without a net. I didn’t have furniture on order, nothing was arriving in 6-8 weeks… I didn’t even have a new set picked out that was my goal! I decided to just… go for it and see what happened. That is so completely out of character for me. Normally I am a big-time planner for those larger purchases and decisions.
Instead, I set my money aside from selling some furniture that wasn’t working, and I went about pouring over the internet looking for “the one”. I knew I wanted pure white, I wanted deep & comfy, and I wanted to be able to afford it! I scoured 100’s of reviews and photos that actual costumers submitted before I finally settled on what I felt was “the one” — the Ava, from Grandin Road.
I kind of had a bit of a furniture crush, and I kept going back to look at it again and again. Jim had watched me search and scour for months and months… and he finally said, “if you like that one, just order a set already and be done with it”. But I was nervous to buy a sofa & chair I had never sat in online.
Until… one day in December, when I popped in to look and my Ava was one sale. For 50% off. So I bought the chair and half figuring it would be a great way to see what I thought, for much less of an investment. If I loved it, I’d grab the sofa… at some point. Again, I wasn’t stressing about it. Which is so not me at all!
Well love her I did! At the time, I had our farm table separating the TV area with my Ava chair, and the fireplace area with my little tufted chairs. I was totally content. You can see where I started [click here] and my set-up with only the Ava chair and a half [click here] if you want to get a sense of the timeline. I was enjoying frequent fires, and my new chair was perfect for TV snuggling! We’ve got a cozy den downstairs that Jimmy I watch movies in, so the upstairs is basically my domain and seating for one wasn’t a big problem in the short term.
JUST FOR FUN, I TRIED THE OTTOMAN IN PLACE OF THE COFFEE TABLE
As luck would have it, my purchase of the Ava chair and a half led to the opportunity to partner with Grandin Road! I had shared her arrival and un-boxing on Instagram, and she was in all my holiday posts. I am so thankful for the opportunity to partner with Grandin Road, and for their generous gift of the Ava sofa, as well as some of the new Spring pieces!
Which do your prefer? I’m kind of loving the ottoman option.
I sort of shimmied the chair and a half into the corner, opening things up a bit, and I placed the sofa table floating in between the farm table and the living room. It delineates the space, yet it’s really light and airy feeling.
The whole house feels refreshed and ready for Spring!
And I’m so dang excited about having my dream furniture, in WHITE. My favorite, goes with anything color. Now I can change pillows, accessories and do any decor I want, without having to think about undertones, and wondering if it’ll look okay. It’s so freeing, and my living room feels bigger and brighter and… just perfect. It’s exactly everything I’ve wanted for so very long!
— For those of you that love the shape and style of my Ava pieces, but white isn’t for you… the Ava also comes in: Fawn, Slate and Navy! You can also but the slipcovers separate as well.
Between having a dining room chandelier installed after so many year [details here], putting up the new $30 shiplap above the fireplace [details here]… the brick accent wall, and the pantry [see the before & after here]. I can’t can’t even tell you how fortunate I feel. It’s taken a long time be able to do a lot of our projects. This poor little house was so very needy, and many of the things we had to do were really expensive, but were not at all pretty or exciting.
I’m just so dang thankful for this season in our life, sometimes I get a little nervous that things are too good. Anyone else feel like that sometimes? Whew… okay enough of that. Thanks so much, as ALWAYS for visiting with me and sharing in my families life. xo Shan

I love your room. I want to recover or find a cream/off-white sofa. I’ve been using slipcovers & heavy bedspreads to cover my pretty teal floral tapestry sofa. Protection from big dogs! So easy to clean…wash with bleach, dry & back on. I found the bedspreads at garage sales so it’s been an inexpensive fix. And brightens up my room.

Thank you Jeannie 🙂
That’s so smart! Pets will definitely take a toll on furniture.
Good luck on the hunt.
And I love everything MMS does, she’s phenomenal!

I’m so happy for you!! I know you waited a long time for this. (You had me laughing with the “in that amount of time you could grow a human and get em off to adulthood – so true!?). I like the ottoman too. It just spreads the cozy all around the room, plus serves as an extra seat if need be. Form and function do it again! Such pretty lanterns and I love the quinces in that pretty orange!
Jill Cooper says
I love your new sofa and love those lights on either side on the wall too. I vote for the ottoman as a coffee table – it looks perfect! And your dining room chairs are to die for!
Tracy says
It’s beautiful Shannon. Congrats on finally getting exactly what you want!

THANK YOU Tracy 🙂
I’m so over the moon!

Your little home is so beautiful and inspiring. I love it. It’s really hard for me to think of white as being practical with a family and lots of guests. We have hard water and so white things aren’t so crisp looking after several washings but I sure do love seeing everyone’s beautiful white living rooms.
Shannon Fox says
Hi Elizabeth. I completely get that, and even with a slipcover that’s washable, it’s not going to be for everyone.
I should update my post to add that the Ava is available in other colors, and you can buy slipcovers only in those extra shades.
Fawn, Slate and Navy are the alternative shades.
We do so much of our entertaining in the Summer, as we have the outdoor space. I actually get very little company that uses our living room. We are always on the decks and around the grill and firepit. 🙂
Happy Spring! Shannon

I love your beautiful home and that it is so full of love. I don’t think the floating table is working though, it seems like a barrier to entering your beautiful new room. I know how it feels when you have a piece of furniture you love and try to fit it in somewhere, but you will eventually find a space somewhere or maybe it’s just waiting for someone else to love it, I often say this to myself when I need to let furniture or clothes go. I imagine how excited I would have been to find just exactly what I was looking for!
As for worrying about being too happy. Everything has it’s season…. don’t waste your happiness worrying what could happen, enjoy every minute…. this too will pass, don’t waste this gift that has been given to you. Anyway, you deserve it, you’ve worked very hard for what you have, enjoy it,
Sorry for the sermon, we’ll done, I love how honest your blog is
God bless you and family and home

Hello!! 🙂 I know it may seem to block, but in real life it’s much roomier all around it and I love it. It’s actually new and I bought it for that exact spot. LOL
We all have different tastes and that is SO okay. I know it does feel really good to slim down and purge. I’ve been getting rid of so much, passing on and donating.
Thank you, I will try to enjoy and not worry. I’m such a worrier, I always have been, it’s my nature. You comment whatever you like. I appreciate your kind words and suggestions. Always, Shannon 🙂

Furniture is gorg but I’m Really grooving that brick wall!!! It seems like it’s just gotten better and better with time. I want to put brick everywhere now in my new (old) home LOL alas my hubby doesn’t have the skills. Shannon, so wish you lived close. I know you could help me whip my house into shape!!! LOL it looks beautiful
Shannon Fox says
Megan,
It’s not as hard as it may seem. You can get thin brick, and it’s pretty much like installing tile. There are YouTube videos and you could start small, or even practice!
Lots of girls are using the brick paneling too! You can get it at Home Depot and Lowes. Often they paint or lime-wash it. Also, there are some AMAZING wallpapers out there now that are pretty good! Do a Pinterest or Google search and you’d be surprised at the options 🙂 Good luck!!!!
Bliss says
It all looks marvelous of course, because you’ve got the touch, or is it you’ve got the couch?
Shannon Fox says
That’s all the couch showing off 😉

Absolutely beautiful. I am getting ready to do something with a 10×12 room that was converted from a screened porch. All pine right now with lots of windows overlooking the lake. Don’t know what to do to start. Have been following you for few years. Love what you do.

Small rooms can be wonderful! Our living room is tiny but it’s just enough 🙂
Your space sounds amazing!!!! First and most important, know what you want to do in the room, and what it needs to be. Function above all else is key.
Then decide what will make it comfortable, and the feel you want it to have. The vibe of the room and it’s decor style or flavour. Then, plan for the pretties.
Vicki says
Thank you Shannon. Hoping when all the extra lumber, tools etc are moved out and the floor laid I can better visualize what I want to do,
Shannon Fox says
Sometimes a blank slate helps for sure.
I’m sure it’ll be wonderful 🙂

Missmustardseed.com painted her all pine sunroom bright white. It looks great! You can see it on her blog.

Thank you Jane. I’m trying not to rush onto the next want, and just basking in this.
I wanted it for so long 😉 lol
Happy weekend dear one.
