A Super Budget Bathroom Makeover
Now that I have worked up the courage to put myself out into the “DIY style/decorator” blog land, I figured it would make sense to share some of my home with you! For no particular reason, I’ll start in our upstairs bath…
Needless to say, our home needed desperate help when we found it and this bathroom was no exception.
It was one big, dark, ugly jumble of hideous with lovely forest green accents.
BEFORE
It boasted exterior light fixtures, a forest green counter top & matching window trims, a golden oak vanity, peeling linoleum flooring and my favorite… a gold shower. This is the third house we have bought that had a gold shower surround. It is one of my most hated features but somehow, they keep showing up in the houses I buy. What’s up with that?
All the items we removed were in good working order and sold at a garage sale, not dumped in a land fill.
Due to being screwed by our contractor “incredibly over budget” on the renovation on the other home on our property (a long story anyone with a bad contractor could empathize with) we had a severely limited budget left to complete the work on our home.
(translation=we were broke!)
AFTER
The vanity is solid wood.
It’s got dovetail joints and the drawers open and close like a dream. It’s actually a really nice piece.
I decided to make it work by tearing it apart, sanding, priming and re painting. I installed new euro hinges and new brushed nickel hardware to freshen & update it. I was pretty proud, because I did it all myself.
Pretty much, if it sat still… it got painted!
The walls, the tub surround and the vanity cabinet all received several coats of primer and white paint.
I even painted the counter top.
I decided to add curtains for a little more color and texture.
Plus, it gets way chilly here in the Winter.
If we had a bit more left in the budget, we would have liked some some white wood plantation shutters, but thanks to our contractor we just didn’t have enough money left.
Please humor me and my novice attempt at sewing 😉
Here’s The Breakdown;
- Vanity Cabinet – Scrubbed Sparkly Clean, Primed & Painted. Added New Brushed Nickle Bin Pulls and Knobs,
- New Sink, & New Brushed Nickel Faucet.
- All The Drawers & Shelves Were Freshly Lined With The Floor Tiles. Works Great!
- Counter Top – Removed, Lightly Sanded, Primed & Painted.
- Walls – All White, With The Exception Of The Green Accent Wall.
- Flooring – Peel & Stick Floor Tiles in Faux Marble – No time or funds for anything else. It was new, clean and super cheap. I did it myself in a jiff, and it was done!
- Lighting – Brushed Nickel with Frosted Shades. Matching Chandy Over The Tub. (Not Pictured)
- Windows – We Installed 23 New Windows In Our Home, 2 of Which Are Located In This Bath. Since It’s A Second Story, We Went With the French Style Swing Opening.
- I Later Added the Semi~Custom Window Coverings.
- Extras – New Commode (always a must), All My Decor Was Already Owned or Purchased at Discount Retailers. I Scored The Black Iron Shelf When A Local Store Was Closing. The Large Mirror is From Ross.
And YES, thanks to our contractor who left us with a virtually non existent budget, I still have a gold shower. Yuck! What are you gonna do though? In our case, we’ll be waiting for a major reno until or son goes off to college. Which is fast approaching! That being said, I am very thankful for what we were able to do with so little money! We spent less then $500 on all the changes you see. Remember, that included 3 light fixtures and 2 new windows too! Now have a space that we can stand live with. For now 😉 I hope this will inspire someone to go for it! You change that space you’re not loving. Just remember, PAINT is your friend! And it makes such an amazing impact.
I can’t say I “knew what I was doing”.
I just DID it.

Wow!! It’s gorgeous!!! I am in love with your curtains!!!
Shannon please tell me what primer and paint you used on the counter top. My kitchen has dark burgundy counter tops. I hate them but have no budget to change them right now Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,
Debbie in KS sewntrouble@yahoo.com
You definitely achieved your goal of brighter. It really looks nice. I’m learning that you can paint things I’d never thought of painting before.:)
Wow that is a great transformation! Love it.I am now following.
Hi Shannon, Thank you for sharing this great renovation at the Open House party. Everything looks beautiful and it is amazing that you accomplished this on such a small budget.
Hugs,
Sherry
Love how the bathroom came out – what a transformation! It caught my eye right away because it looks a lot like my bathroom! Come on over and check it out. The post is called “Bathroom Reveal” from April 20, 2011. (I had trouble copying the link for you.) I guess we have similar tastes!

Shannon, I love your bathroom! You did a fabulous job! So glad I came over to visit from Debbie’s Newbie party!
You did a wonderful job! Looks great! I need to update my bath too. Thanks for the inspiration.

What a huge improvement! Great job. You should come link up to Thrifty Thursday this week. This looks like a project that would be featured! Blessings…
So refreshing look. Love the redo and your idea.
Great changes !! Just stoppin by from Debbie’s newbie party!
Thank you Debbie. We did the best we could at the time, with what we had to work with. We considered redoing it the year before last but put on a new roof instead. So much less glamorous!! That’s okay though… leaves me something to day dream about. I didn’t linkup. Thought I had to wait until Monday proper? I’ll go do it now. Thanks doll 😉
@Gina,
Thanks so much. It required lots and lots of paint. We we’re plum outta money so I had to mostly work with what was there. I appreciate you stopping by. Shannon
Shannon that is one gorgeous bath. I love it! Did you join the newbie party too tonight? I just came over from your comment I have not looked at all the list yet. Hope you do.
Your bathroom looks fabulous! I would have never guessed you did all that for less than $500. Really awesome job you should be proud of!
